Why Female-Led Countries Are Doing Better, Wifi Parking Lots and the Best Radio Station In The World | Non-Obvious Insights #213

Dear Newsletterest,

Something. Always be non-obvious!

How To Listen to the Best Radio Station in the World

What if you could tune into any radio station in the world to hear the latest news? That's what a stunning app called Radio Garden allows you to do and it's just the thing to help you break out of the media bubble of wherever you live and get a global perspective. Here's an older article that profiles Radio Garden -- you'll need to use your phone in order for it to work properly.

Why do the Best Run Countries All Have Female Leaders?

Some of the countries with the best coronavirus responses seem to have one thing in common: a female leader. From Angela Merkel sharing the facts early with her people to Norwegian PM Erna Solberg hosting a "no adults allowed" press conference to answer children's questions ... these leaders are telling the truth, focusing on people, and showing empathy in the process. Sadly, these are exactly the things that too many male leaders around the world seem incapable of.

NASA Uses Red and Blue 3D Glasses To Pilot Mars Rover

The team responsible for piloting the Curiosity rover on Mars is on lockdown and therefore doesn't have access to their usual powerful NASA computers. They have 3D images but lack the usual technology to read them. So they are turning to a tool some of you may remember -- red and blue 3D glasses. It's a throwback to the 1950s and one of several examples of how this pandemic is forcing us to turn the clock back sometimes to find analog solutions to modern problems. Another example: the state of New Jersey issued a call for volunteers who can program in COBOL, a 60 year old programming language.

Why More Managers May Say Yes To Virtual Pitch Meetings

If you have to give a pitch for new business and are considering doing it virtually - you may find an easier time than usual getting a prospect to say yes. And that might not be good news. As this article from the Hollywood Reporter points out, managers at film and TV studios may be saying yes to pitch meetings right now because they are feeling the pressure to be doing something so they can justify their jobs. It's a curious little irony - but if the same thing is happening in other industries, it might be time for you to try to get that long awaited meeting you've been hoping for. Just don't expect them to do much more than listen.

Our New Favorite CEO For A Time of Crisis?

In a video clip of a CNBC interview that went viral last week, investment company CEO Chamath Palihapitiya said that the US should let billionaires and hedge funds go bankrupt. "They don't get to summer in the Hamptons? Who cares?" he says. His main argument: employees wouldn't be fired if massive companies filed for bankruptcy; speculators would take the hit instead. In the interview, he shared what many people across the world are openly wondering about how the world's governments will (and are) responding to the pandemic and who will actually benefit in the long run from the stimulus being offered.

How Libraries Are Responding Right Now

Some libraries are moving author events online and sharing book recommendations with readers and overwhelmed parents for their kids. There are some taking it a bit further in creative ways to help their communities. Some are offering free wifi access in their parking lots. Others are using their 3D printers to produce helpful medical equipment like face shields. The pandemic has made the digital divide worse and this is one of those rare ideas that can help and also demonstrates why our communities need our libraries.

The UNO Redesign You Didn't Know You Needed

Though this minimalist redesign of UNO technically happened back in February, it's hard to imagine a more relevant moment for this iconic game to get a redesign. Yes, I'm ordering a set. Somehow just looking at the picture makes me feel weirdly calm and at peace in a time of lockdown. After I leave it in the mailbox for 24 hours of course. Just in case.
