In March 2020, I took down Popular Information's paywall. Since then, each edition of Popular Information (791 newsletters!) has been freely available to everyone. Over the last four years, we've been able to produce journalism that rattles the cages of the powerful and creates change. Here are just a few examples:

• Popular Information revealed that Darden Restaurants, the parent company of Olive Garden, was not offering employees paid sick leave unless required by law. As a result, Olive Garden employees were reporting to work sick during a pandemic. Less than 24 hours after our story was published, Darden announced that its 170,000 hourly workers would now receive paid sick leave. 

• Popular Information obtained a brochure that was given to migrants who agreed to board flights chartered by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R). The brochure listed numerous benefits that migrants would be eligible to receive, including “8 months cash assistance” and “job placement." None of it was true. Days after the Popular Information report, the brochure was cited in a class action lawsuit filed against DeSantis and his accomplices.

• Popular Information exposed how a top College Board executive, Todd Huston, was behind a controversial bill that "limit[s] what teachers can say regarding race, history, and politics in Indiana classrooms." Huston was simultaneously serving as Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives. A day after Popular Information’s story, the College Board announced it was parting ways with Huston.
