Palestinians are fleeing in the face of a long-feared Israeli ground invasion of Rafah, the massively overcrowded city in southern Gaza where 1.4 million people had sought refuge. The Israeli military ordered the evacuation of eastern Rafah while pledging to unleash “extreme force” against what UNICEF describes as a “city of children who have nowhere safe to go” — even as Hamas has announced that it accepted terms for a permanent ceasefire. It’s our duty as journalists at this moment to bear witness to the hideous suffering in Gaza — without devaluing the humanity of the Palestinians being starved and killed with arms provided by the United States. If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Large segments of the population in Rafah right now have an average of 1 liter of water per person per day. Now Israel is forcing them to evacuate to areas that have been obliterated and have no humanitarian infrastructure whatsoever. In the words of Heidi Matthews, a professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and international law expert, “The ‘evacuation’ of Rafah is illegal. There are no ‘humanitarian’ or ‘safe zones.’ Civilians are being forcibly displaced to areas totally unsuitable to human habitation. This is a crime against humanity.” And yet, in response to Hamas agreement to a permanent ceasefire, Israel’s far-right national security minister said there can only be “one answer, an immediate order to occupy Rafah!” In this moment, it is vital that we as journalists focus the world’s attention on the immense suffering of civilians in Gaza and pull no punches about who is responsible — in both the U.S. and Israeli governments. Thank you,
