Album Daily - Three new releases

#23 - The Week of April 20 - 24

Hello,

Friday turned out to be a pretty great day for music releases.  Because of this, you will see three albums labeled as "New Releases" in this edition of the newsletter.  Whittling it down to one selection was just not possible with all of the great stuff released on Friday.  Enjoy!

Last week's most clicked album was The New Abnormal by The Strokes.  They're getting some pretty good radio play on this album, it could wind up being pretty big.

Now turn your speakers up!

The Bonny

Gerry Cinnamon

Genre: Folk/Alternative
Release Date: April 17, 2020
Top Tracks: The Bonny, Where We're Going, Sun Queen
Similar Artists: Catfish and the Bottlemen, Bob Dylan, Blossoms

This is rare, and amazing. Gerry Cinnamon, a Scottish independent artist, with no record label, promotion team, or the resources that come with it, hit the top of the U.S. charts with his self-produced debut album in 2017. Now, he releases his second album in the midst of the pandemic, because he does not want to let his fans down. His lyrics are consistently optimistic, pointing to better times in the future, such as "Dark days, but I've got sun rays". The title track, "The Bonny", has Cinnamon looking at the aspects of his life that lift his spirits, among wonderful harmonica work.

A Muse In Her Feelings

Album Cover 2

Genre: R&B/Soul
Release Date: April 17, 2020
Top Tracks: Outlandish, Miss Me? Dangerous City, So What
Similar Artists: Majid Jordan, PARTYNEXTDOOR, 6LACK

The beauty of utilizing multiple features on an album is that it creates many different sounds, thus keeping the listener engaged the entire time. Toronto duo, dvsn, employs some heavyweight features like PARTYNEXTDOOR, Future, among others. While all of the features feel organic, I can't get past the thought that the solo songs are the highlight of this album. Tracks like "Outlandish" and "Miss Me?" show their raw talent, and even though they probably won't be as popular as the songs with features, they are the true gems here.

love is not dying

Jeremy Zucker

Genre: Pop
Release Date: April 17, 2020
Top Tracks: somebody loves you, lakehouse, julia, "always, I'll care"
Similar Artists: blackbear, Lauv

Jeremy Zucker uses unique sounds and distortion to create soundscapes that he can sing over, marrying his voice with the instrumentals. On this album, he really lets the listeners into his mind, outlining his feelings, struggles, and questions. “Is it selfish not to be selfless?” he asks. Later, exploring loneliness, he says, “It’s lonely here without your laughter, and I’m afraid of what comes after.” In the end, he does what any respectable pop artist can; he gets you up and dancing, and then sits you down and sings to your soul.

Was It Not

Marian Hill

Genre: Electropop
Release Date: March 18, 2020
Top Tracks: Eat U Alive, Was It Not
Similar Artists:  SHAED, Bishop Briggs

Marian Hill delivers a dreamy, comforting, electropop EP that is full of minimalistic journeys into love. The title track, “Was It Not” portrays the singer as lacking confidence, wondering if her memories are a true depiction of reality or not. We all can probably relate to this, wondering if our mind is intentionally remembering what we want it to. The saxophone solo on “Eat U Alive” is a nice surprise that shows their groovy/funk side as well.

Welcome to the Cruel World

Ben Harper

Genre: Singer-Songwriter/Rock
Release Date: February 1, 1994
Top Tracks: Walk Away, Waiting on an Angel, Welcome to the Cruel World
Similar Artists: John Butler Trio, Jack Johnson

The debut record that gave Ben Harper his original following, “Welcome to the Cruel World”, gives us a glimpse into the star this artist would become. As shown throughout his career, Harper is able to straddle the line between soothing, intimate acoustic guitar and head bumping rock and roll. We see that here, as the album starts strong with great acoustic guitar work, setting the tone on the grungy track “Whipping Boy”. Later, he slows it down for “Waiting on an Angel”, a track that calms and soothes.
