What is your “official” professional role and field?
I support social impact initiatives to critically - but compassionately - examine the stories they tell, invite new voices into the conversation, and to transform bold ideas into even bolder action. This work has manifested into a variety of “official” labels, from Communications to Corporate Social Responsibility to Volunteer Management, but my work always circles back to this same core mission.
As a Volunteer Partnerships Manager, I build and nurture relationships between Corporate Social Responsibility professionals, the corporate volunteers they serve, and beneficiaries of programs fostering socio-economic and cultural inclusion. The majority of my work has been within the Migration sector, but I also work in domestic violence support.
As a Story Facilitator and Story Amplifier, I support people from all walks of life to share their professional and personal stories with ever-increasing audacity and self-kindness - few things bring me greater joy than watching someone talk about themselves like they never have before! This happens in-person, such as in the sessions I offer to domestic violence survivors at the shelter that once helped me, or in online workshop settings.
I’m currently seeking my next role, and am excited to join forces with an organization passionate about telling stories which challenge the status quo with dignity and compassion. How did you get to where you are today in your career? I believe that so much of how the world works comes down to four kinds of stories we tell: the ones we tell ourselves about ourselves, the ones we tell about ourselves to each other, the ones we tell ourselves about each other, and the ones we tell about each other to each other.
I can attribute my career growth to all four, but what pushed me forward the most is the first two: when my own willingness to consider a truer version of my story was met with a supportive community that wanted my truth to emerge… magic happens!
Case in point: at a particularly difficult moment in my life when I scarcely believed in myself, I had the opportunity to volunteer with a program that helped refugees grow self-confidence. I saw the facilitator do her thing, and this quiet voice in me said “I can do what she’s doing.” I eventually told her so. Three months later, I was the program Co-Lead. I saw me, and so did she.
Your relationship to “social impact”: has it evolved since you began your career?
YES. As a white woman born into a high-control religious group which I would now classify as a cult, white saviorism was deeply embedded into my understanding of social impact. Once upon a time, I was one of those white girls taking pictures with children of color, believing she was building them a brighter future. Although I did my best with what I knew at that time, I’m immensely grateful for the turning points in my life - the deaths, births and migrations both physical and spiritual - which made it possible for me to critically examine the stories I had been taught to tell.
Now, my social impact is both a voice AND a microphone - I am learning to discern when is the right moment to use my voice to advocate for myself and those I serve, and when to de-center myself so that other voices may do the same.
What other communities are you a part of and what do they mean to you?
In addition to having a LOT of fun facilitating weekly 'Body Doubling Sessions' within The Bloom community, I have big love for the community held by Capacity, the Zürich-based entrepreneurship and labor-market integration incubator for people with migrant or refugee experience - their current jobseeker program offer amazing resources and mentorship for folx in Switzerland!
Rapid fire resource questions! Your favorite.. Podcasts?
🎤 Roots of Changewith Sam Chavez - a great resource for social impact communications professionals!
🎤 The Moneyless Society Podcast- I’m a proud Solarpunk, and these conversations remind me to dream beyond current societal infrastructures.
🎤 Nothing Much Happenswith Kathryn Nikolai - This sleep story podcast is my favorite place to drift off to when the world feels too overwhelming. Kathryn has a gift for noticing the small miracles of life, and my nervous system feels supported by her storytelling.
🎤 Create Imperfect Anyway- On my own podcast, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing folx of many backgrounds on how they step through their own storms of perfectionism, and what creativity emerges from those storms. Books?
📚Brave Spaceby Beth Strano -shared with me by a fellow Bloomer, this is a poem which has massively impacted the way I facilitate and hold space. 📚How to Do Nothingby Jenny Odell - this deceptively simple and attention-grabbing title belies the author’s message of the radical activism we might find in “doing nothing” - it’s inspired me to make friends with my local crows!
📚Cassandra Speaksby Elizabeth Lesser -stories have a way of repeating themselves, and the more we recognize the patterns, the easier it becomes to determine where we want to rewrite the story.
📚 If Women Rose Rootedby Sharon Blackie - want to embark on your own Eco-heroine’s journey to unravel the untrue while reconnecting with the land? Let this book be your guide.
📚The Day the World Stops Shoppingby J B Mackinnon - deftly threading together pleasantly surprising data from economic crises of the past century, this book offers glimmers of hope for a post-capitalist world.
