How did you get to where you are today in your career?
Inspiration, because growing up I had two role models: my grandfather, who was a social leader and a tireless defender of the rights of peasant communities in Colombia; and my mother, who is a strong female leader and has achieved a lot in her career despite the barriers to women at the time. Passion for a more peaceful and equal world has been my driving force. It's what motivates me to constantly seek improvement and strive for excellence in what I am doing, allowing me to stay focused and committed to my goals.
Your relationship to “social impact”: has it evolved since you began your career?
It has definitely evolved! Throughout my career, I haven't followed a linear path, and that's because I enjoy learning new things. My first professional experience in Colombia was in the reintegration of ex-combatants into society. I started by providing psychological support to young people and later moved on to working on monitoring and evaluation of the program itself. I also worked as a gender advisor for the Bogotá office that focuses on social inclusion, where I learned and connected with grassroots communities and social movements, and mainstreamed gender in the organization for all program and projects targeting vulnerable communities.
Later, my career took a different turn and I worked in Colombia's diplomatic missions in The Hague and Brussels. Both experiences were very different and gave me the opportunity to attend meetings at the International Criminal Court, the OPCW and to participate in a state visit of the President of Colombia to the Netherlands. Then I designed and implemented projects (a special one for me was on the prevention of gender-based violence) and gave first-hand support to the Colombian community living in Belgium.
So I went from doing fieldwork in remote areas of Colombia to navigating the complexities of international protocol and understanding different realities related to migration. Reflecting on this journey, I can only say that these experiences have nurtured my social impact journey and taught me that one can make meaningful contributions from many different places.
What other communities are you a part of, and what do they mean to you?
I am part of the steering committee of Women in International Security in Brussels (WIIS). It is a very special group where we are cultivating community sense within the very competitive environment of Brussels. Here I have felt included and able to develop my leadership skills.
Also, I recently joined the Colombian women collective for peace in Belgium. This space allows me to actively contribute to a cause close to my heart which is supporting peacebuilding in Colombia and stay connected to my roots. Rapid fire! Share your favorite...
