What is your “official” professional role and field?
I am the Vice President of External Affairs at Matriculate, a USA nonprofit organization that helps high-achieving high school students from low-income and under-represented communities receive free support on their college application and enrollment process by connecting virtually “near-peers” advisors - college students from across the US who are trained to become mentors to these high school students. (Many of these “Advising Fellows” were previously “High School Fellows” who received mentorship and are now paying it forward by becoming advisors.)
As the inaugural VP of External Affairs, I lead two teams: our fundraising team which is in charge of bringing in revenue to support the organization’s operations, and our marketing & communications team, which is in charge of effectively communicating what Matriculate does to all external audiences, such as donors, prospective students, policymakers, college partners, and educators.
What is your unofficial role and field?
I currently have multiple unofficial roles - community leader, nonprofit executive, social impact expert, and social justice advocate. My field, broadly speaking, is social impact - I have worked on a variety of issues within the field, including but not limited to food security, education, immigrant rights, gender justice, civic engagement, and public health.
How did you get to where you are today in your career?
It has been a long and winding road full of risk-taking (some good, some not so great, in hindsight) decisions, which included leaving a secure and stable federal government job in DC, taking a pay cut, and moving to Boston; moving to India without a job; and more recently, moving to Los Angeles in 2016 to lead a social justice organization through what turned out to be an incredibly turbulent time for our country, first with the Trump Administration and then COVID. What has driven me has been a need to do impactful work, leave the world a better place than I found it, and serve as a voice for those who have been marginalized.
Your relationship to “social impact”: has it evolved since you began your career?
My career started in the late 1990s, before “social impact” was a widely used term and certainly not a commonly pursued path. And just as the field of social impact has evolved, I have evolved with it through various roles I’ve held, particularly at the senior level. I currently see it as much more intersectional and more justice-based than perhaps I perceived it when I was younger. As a non-Christian, woman of color, and immigrant to the US (I moved here when I was three) - I am now more comfortable than ever about challenging the status quo, disrupting existing narratives, demanding that historically marginalized voices be represented, and yes, calling out the BS.
