Flow State - Sophia Jani
Welcome back to Flow State, your daily instrumental music newsletter. Paid subscribers get our private daily Spotify playlist, unlock the weekly Tuesday podcast, and keep the newsletter alive. You can upgrade to the paid tier here (20% off this week only). Good morning. Today we’re listening to Sophia Jani, a German contemporary classical composer. She studied at conservatories in Augsburg, Munich, and Yale, and currently serves as the Composer in Residence of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.¹ She was especially influenced by composers such as Laurie Spiegel and Meredith Monk who had classical backgrounds and went into electronic composition.² We’re starting with her 2022 debut LP, Music as a mirror, which shapeshifts between harmonic pulsations and overlapping sustained strings. Next we’re playing her new LP, Six Pieces for Solo Violin, which features performances by Teresa Allgaier. “When I listen to music for solo violin, I hear the noblest form of solitude,” Jani wrote in a reflective essay for The Strad. Music as a mirror - Sophia Jani (50m, no vocals) Six Pieces for Solo Violin - Sophia Jani (40m, no vocals) Have a great Wednesday. |
