Our community includes some of the most incredible local leaders in social impact across the globe 🌍 In our learning platform, they have begun to build a Collaborative Library📚This week, the spotlight is on Nanditha, who contributes resources for careers in gender equality to the Collaborative Library.
How did you get to where you are today in gender equality? I started with a corporate job in one of the world’s largest multinational corporations, considered a dream job by many back then. The job did not sit well with me towards the end and I struggled to perform - I did not see why my job mattered and that began to bother me. This led me to quit my job and explore social impact as a career space. My exploration in a classroom, this time on the other side of it as a teacher in a government school for primary students, was the starting point and a huge catalyst for what came later. I understood how I thrived in work that gave me a sense of purpose and which helped others in some way. This led me to then seek out and learn more about work in the social impact space and figure out which social issues I cared about (gender and education), reach out to and find mentors and internships, learn on the ground, and then begin working in this space with organizations that do phenomenal work to empower girls and young women.
What resources do you feel would benefit people the most in learning about careers in gender equality?
I often find myself turning to books more than any other medium to know more about communities and lived experiences that are very different from mine. We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Seeing Like A Feminist by Nivedita Menon, and Karukku by Bama are books I would highly recommend for people who want to know more about the ways in which gender norms and other intersections (such as caste) often put women at a disadvantage.
Who are three people to follow in this space who have influenced your journey?
Kirthi Jayakumar (also a bloomer 😉) who runs The Gender Security Project, Yashasvini Rajeshwar who runs AuxoHub, and Neelam Jain who runs PeriFerry. Kirthi was my starting point for developing a foundational understanding of gender issues and feminism - it was from her (and her then organization The Red Elephant Foundation) that I learnt more about intersectional feminism, intersecting identities, and the various ways in which all of this affects our lives differently. While that foundational learning proved crucial, it was through conversations over the years with Yashasvini that I learnt more about gender issues and the various ways in which organizations are working on solutions for these pressing problems on the ground. My understanding of sexual minorities and trans people in particular comes from my short stint with PeriFerry, founded by my college junior, Neelam Jain. It was an experience that gave me access into the lives and struggles of trans people and I had the opportunity to meet a lot of people from the community and learn from them. These three people have influenced my journey (and my career) in a lot of ways. Why did you decide to become a Gender Leader at The Bloom and what is your dream vision for those who visit the Collaborative Library in our platform?
As a person who did not go to the best institutions or had academic knowledge relevant to the social impact space, there were a lot of struggles I had to go through to find work in this space, especially in the initial years. My acquaintances and networks helped me back then, and that’s exactly what I hope to pay forward through The Bloomby being a Gender Leader. I envision the Collaborative Library to be a welcoming resource page for all those who are anxious, uncertain, or worried about either getting into the impact space as a career option or for those looking to switch between different causes as their field of work. Connect with Nanditha and read through the growing library of social impact resources in the Collaborative Library of our learning platform 🌍
