5-Bullet Friday — All Eyes On MDMA, K-Pop Star Makers, Learning to Read Nature, and More
|
|||
Hi All! Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you. This edition is brought to you by LMNT, my go-to electrolyte drink mix. Be sure to see their deal of the week in the P.S. What I’m listening to“Clean My Wounds” (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music) by Corrosion Of Conformity. Short article I’m sharing as widely as possible - time to rallyFDA advisors voted against MDMA therapy – researchers are still fighting for it (BBC) by Rachel Nuwer. There is a make-it-or-break-it moment unfolding right now for psychedelic medicines. By August 11, the FDA will decide whether or not to approve MDMA therapy as a treatment for PTSD. This is decades in the making and will have ripple effects for the broader future of psychedelics in the US. The data clearly show that the FDA should approve, but it’s been thrown into confusion by an advisory committee almost entirely without knowledge of these compounds. Documentary I’m watchingGeneration K-Pop (YouTube), directed by Mahyar Goudarzi (@good.artsy). I first watched this documentary on a plane, and I’ve since only found a YouTube version in German. Fear not, my non-German-speaking friends: to watch with English subtitles, first turn on the German subtitles, and then change them to English (or another language of your choice). Here is a step-by-step video on how to turn on English subtitles. Fiction book I’m finishingThe Bear by Andrew Krivak. Thank you to CK and TS for recommending this parable. I ended up devouring it over 3–4 evenings. The prose is gorgeous—the author has been a National Book Award in Fiction finalist—and it’ll take around 20 pages for your brain to get accustomed to its unusual weaving. I’ve pared down the description on purpose, but here’s a taste: “In an Edenic future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. … The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape...” The less you know about the book in advance, the better the reading experience. Go in as blind as possible, and you’ll likely finish this book in less than a week. Quote I’m pondering“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my interview with New York Times bestselling author Michael Pollan, these resources to learn more about psychedelic-assisted therapies, and the latest supercombo podcast episode, featuring strength trainers Pavel Tsatsouline and Christopher Sommer. P.S. Deal of the Week — LMNT’s delicious electrolyte drink mix!LMNT has been a staple of mine for years now. In the summer, I typically drink 1–2 per day to stay hydrated, which helps me maintain focus and feel my best. I add electrolytes for many reasons: because I drink water compulsively while sitting at a laptop (which dilutes electrolytes and leads me to feel tired); because I’m typically on a low-carb diet; and because I’ve lost electrolytes through exercise, sauna, etc. It’s convenient hydration insurance that tastes great. Each serving of LMNT delivers a meaningful dose of electrolytes without the garbage—no sugar, no artificial ingredients, no coloring, no junk. My favorite flavor is Citrus Salt, which, as a side note, you can use to make a kick-ass, no-sugar margarita. I’m also loving the brand-new LMNT Sparkling water, which I have stocked in my fridge. |
