Andréis a stakeholder engagement specialist who brings global supply chain actors together to build solutions for a sustainable future.
He began his career in Brazil working and living in the Amazon until his ex-partner proposed moving to learn a new language. At 28, he went from mid-level career in Brazil to pot-washing in Ireland. He took up various jobs from washing dishes to gardening, making pizzas and becoming a climbing instructor before landing his first sustainability internship and eventually current role at Trase. He anticipated being away for a year before headed back to Brazil to his old job and had even bought a plot of land and thought about building a house but many things changed along the way. In a recent mentorship event in The Bloom, he shared many valuable insights, transferable to all who are pivoting and transitioning in both career and life. Here were our team's main takeaways ☀️ 🌿 Proactivity: André highlighted the need to be proactive and to translate challenges into learning opportunities, showing resilience and adaptability in the face of change. For instance, when pot-washing in Ireland he'd be in front of a wall every day and so attached sticky notes with English words, sentences and anything new he'd hear around him to help him pick-up the language faster. In his words: "If I’m gonna spend 10-12 hours in front of this wall, I’m going to make this wall interesting." 😂 His impressive language-learning journey led him to complete his Master's in English and he now works in a global organization using technical niche language in English that even native speakers struggle with.
👁️Self-awareness: Andre's journey allowed him to understand his own limits and boundaries while learning new skills and preparing for future challenges. In his words: "Understand yourself so you can be your best wherever you might be."
🧳Career steps "back" are not always set-backs: André sees career pivots and "squiggly careers" as more a fast-track to growth than a step back. In his words, "I started as an intern and was surprised to see how many of those skills I could apply. I became more robust, more resilient, and moved forward quickly. It was one promotion after another, all because of my experience. I had much more to offer than the role required. It's like having a bag full of knowledge and experience; the bag is full, and you start pulling all these things into the situation." He mentioned the importance of imagining that you have a full bag when transitioning roles and using everything you've got in the bag, to your next role. Steps back or to the side can sometimes propel us further than we thought possible. His journey is proof that... linearity is overrated in the journey of blooming 🌻

Taahira: Holi bloomers, I'm reaching out here to ask for help for extra fresh eyes on pitches I'm working on for some travel publications. One of my goals for this year is to score at least one paid article from a travel writing publication by the end of the year. I finally have gotten down the guts to pen down my ideas and I would love some extra guidance/help on tweaking it before I send it to the travel editors. Is anyone here an ex/current editor for lifestyle/travel for a newspaper/magazine/book, who could help me out with this, please :) P.s - one of my pitches is on Tamil heritage food in the north of Sri Lanka, how it is has evolved through war and continues to feed people :)
Kirthi: Hi folks! We're accepting applications for our upcoming batches for the Feminist Foreign Policy Course. A wild card: We have an EST/PST friendly batch in August. Please feel free to apply :)
Sanne: 👋 Are you / do you know a youth-led or youth-focused movement in Italy, Denmark, Poland, Spain, France, Ireland, Germany, or UK? Does your / their work touch on young people's social media use or digital rights more broadly? If so, drop a comment or send me a line. I'm helping People vs. Big Tech roll-out some exciting plans for the fall of 2024 - including a compensated campaigning opportunity for youth advocates- and would like to connect with youth organizations that can partner with us.
Devi: Hello everyone! I'm posting this opportunity for young feminists who are doing any form of co-leadership and looking for peer coaching. For the past 2 years, Closer Than You Think been exploring collective leadership, curating research, resources, and tools for co-leads across feminist movements and organizations. In 2023, we launched a co-leadership coaching practice in collaboration with 4 feminist coaches. In 2024, we are deepening our work in collective leadership, with new initiatives coming soon on accompaniment for girls, feminist leadership transitions and more co-leadership cafes. So if you are a young feminist activist under the age of 35 who is part of a co-leadership or shared power model or planning to start one soon, you can express your interest by July 1st!
Kelly: Hello there! Does anyone here work as a Chief of Staff for a social impact or climate organization (larger nonprofit, social enterprise, philanthropic foundation/ family office, etc.)? I am exploring this a potential career pivot from external partnerships roles and would love to connect with others to learn about their experience. Thanks!
