The Shiny Dime Challenge

A Shiny Dime is a specific and surprising idea. It's the singular focus of a piece of writing. And it's a concept that will help you capture attention in a crowded world.

Hey writers,

This week, you learned about the concept of a Core Idea: what it is, why it matters, and how to find it. Now, it’s time to put it into practice. Here’s your final writing prompt of the Shiny Dime Challenge:

Write an essay only you can write.

What are you uniquely positioned to say? What is your Core Idea? That is what you should aim to express with this essay.

You could have two Core Ideas or three or five, but there is only one that you’re ready to write about. What idea feels most alive to you right now? What message are you burning to share with the world? Share that idea.

Oftentimes, this idea is so core to who you are that it’s difficult to see at first, like a sticker slapped onto your forehead. You might need to change your perspective to see it. So, talk to friends. Pitch your ideas, and reflect on which feel unmistakably true to who you are — and unmistakably valuable to the world. 

As you start writing the essay that only you can write, remember the 10-10-10 Heuristic. It should: 

• Pique a stranger’s interest in 10 seconds
• Be interesting enough to read about for 10 minutes
• And be compelling enough to explore for 10 years. 

If this feels like a big task, it’s because it is. We run an entire five-week Bootcamp dedicated to helping you develop and share your Core Idea. (It’s kind of our shtick.) But don’t get intimidated. This prompt is for you to start excavating your best idea, your shiniest dime. Just get started, and give this essay your best shot. (Also, take as much time on it as you need.
