Negotiating should never be about squeezing out the last dollar. ​ It should't even be about winning. ​ Negotiations are relationships. Pushing too hard can sour it fast, and kill any possibility of future interactions. ​ Negotiations are about fair outcomes that build trust and goodwill. ​ It's not about getting everything you want, it's about both sides getting some of what they want. ​ If there's a deal point that you need to have, you'll likely have to give up something somewhere else to get it. ​ I've seen a lot of business deals fall apart because one side tries to bully, or push too hard, or not 100% honest, costing both sides time and money. ​ If both sides want to get the deal done, contentment and a strong reputation will serve you better than hyper-optimizing every deal. ​ Nick Maggiulli, as he often does, wrote a nice piece on this this week.​ ​
