Biden Speaks to the Nation

President Biden last night addressed the nation for the first time since withdrawing from the 2024 election, saying he left the race because “the defense of democracy” was more important than his personal ambition.

In a speech that hit many of the Democratic Party’s main talking points, he outlined his plans as president for the next six months, including reforming the Supreme Court, working for gun control, and fighting “extremism and hate.”

Biden spoke glowingly of his own record, particularly on the economy, crime, and border control, but said it was time to hand the reins over to younger leaders. “The best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation,” he said.

He ended with an endorsement of VP Kamala Harris, the Democrats likely presidential nominee, and concluded, “It has been the privilege of my life to serve this nation for over 50 years.”

Wildfires Rage Across Western U.S. and Canada

Wildfires raging across Oregon, California, Washington, and Canada have forced thousands to evacuate, shut down highways, and degraded the air quality over several states.

Oregon’s Durkee fire, the current largest wildfire, has burned over 239,000 acres and forced the evacuation of the entire town of Huntington, home to about 500 people. Area storms are expected to further complicate efforts to control the blaze.

Back-to-back heatwaves in other western states have created challenging conditions for firefighters as risks for re-ignitions are high. Across the border, multiple fires forced Canadian officials to evacuate 25,000 individuals from Jasper, Alberta.
