fresh soil
Honest conversations the phenomenal social impact leaders in The Bloom community. Every week brings "fresh soil" – inspiration for your career and beyond by learning from our diverse network of leaders across the globe.
What motivated you to pursue a climate career? I’m a first-generation Afrolatina whose cultural and familial lived experiences are deeply intertwined with the reality of climate change. All the places I call home are either islands or coastal cities on the frontlines of climate disaster. Given my professional background in creative storytelling, I was eager to contribute my experience, skillset, and gifts toward raising awareness and contributing to climate solutions. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that I took a hard look at where my career was headed and decided it was time to let go of anything that didn’t contribute to a purpose-driven vocation. Our careers take up a significant amount of our attention, and I wanted to ensure I was investing my time in co-creating a livable future for coastal communities of color like my own whose cultures and personhoods are often considered last in the climate conversation.
How did you get to where you are today in the climate space?
I’ve consistently prayed for alignment in my creative career and have led a very intentional and purpose-driven path. When I sensed an overwhelming desire to pivot from a former dream career in advertising into climate work, I began researching, volunteering, building relationships within the space, and eventually earning paid work in climate. In my experience, no amount of hard work alone can exceed the power of relationships, community, and faith. The most aligned opportunities have not come from my striving or efforts, they’ve come via God’s favor and guidance in my purpose.
What is one achievement in your career that confirmed your belonging in this space?
I experienced my greatest accomplishment this year when I hosted my first masterclass for creative women of color who want to find their place in climate but don’t know where to start. The feedback was overwhelmingly clear: we need more spaces like this. It helped me realize that all of the challenges I faced at the beginning of my career pivot were all part of my purpose to help uplift other women in their purpose.
If you could share one resource that would benefit bloomers the most in learning about climate careers, what would this be and why? Beyond climate data and statistics, we need human stories that show the reality of climate and build empathy for climate justice. The As She Rises podcast is a collection of audio stories and poems that share the realities of climate from first-hand accounts of Indigenous and female voices about how climate change is affecting their communities. This podcast is an excellent way to start learning about climate action from underrepresented voices. I also love the plethora of information and resources mentioned in the show that invite you to be part of climate solutions.
