Senior editor Kiki Aranita’s solution to the unbearable D.C. summer heat is a rooster-shaped clay jug. Called a botijo, it’s a traditional Spanish drinking jug made of porous unglazed clay — and it keeps her water as cold as a Stanley does. Here’s why: As the water inside evaporates through the material, heat goes with it, and the remaining water drops in temperature, keeping it nice and cold. To use, you simply pour water into your mouth at a 45-degree angle, no lip contact, moldy straw, or cup required. Aranita says that “it’s the most fun way to drink water, I guarantee you.”
