How to prevent sweat from damaging your tech

This time of year, many of us are guilty of subjecting our gadgets to some accidental waterlogging: Rigging a sports bra strap as a makeshift phone holder. Wiping away brow sweat with your smartwatch. Wearing earbuds during hot runs.

Perspiration can deteriorate your tech over time. And although it’s rare, some gadgets can be destroyed beyond repair by it. Fortunately, there are easy measures you can take to ensure your sweat doesn’t do any lasting damage to your tech in the long run—from storing it with silica-gel packets to cleaning it frequently.

For years, editor Katie Okamoto assumed that slipping and sliding during yoga was just a fact of sweaty summer practice. But Wirecutter’s top-pick yoga mat—a natural rubber one that actually absorbs sweat to prevent slippage—changed all that. “In the decade since buying my own Jade mat, I have not looked back,” she writes. “My mat has stood up to my evolving practice, no matter how hot and sweaty I get.”

And no matter how wet your phone gets: Don’t put it in a bag of rice.
