Movo: Founder Lessons from Growing a SaaS in Tough Industries

He turned a childhood of poverty into a multi-million dollar SaaS company.

Jason Radisson was raised by a 16-year-old single mother in rural Massachusetts. He worked multiple jobs to pay for school.

Despite his disadvantages, he attended Harvard grad school and landed jobs at McKinsey and later Uber.

In 2015, Jason founded Movo.

But bootstrapping the business wasn’t easy. Early pilots ran on shoestring budgets and getting customers was a struggle.

Every sale was a tough win.

Jason realized instead of trying to sell to everyone, he needed to focus on early adopters and people with urgent needs right now.

He constantly tweaked his pitch and product.

The company grew slowly, but new challenges emerged.

He had to juggle customer demands while keeping the product flexible but avoiding one-off solutions.

Then COVID-19 hit, disrupting everything but also creating urgent demand for a solution like Movo -- if he could deliver.

He and his team adapted quickly, turning crisis into opportunity to help companies manage remote and essential workers.

Today, his startup:

  • Serves nearly 100 customers

  • Generates multiple 7-figures in ARR

  • Has raised nearly $10M in VC funding

  • Supports 700,000+ workers on their platform

Jason’s journey proves that:

No matter where you start, resilience and execution can take you far.

Keep pushing forward—your success story is waiting to be written. 💪

🤔 Why Founder-Led Sales Beats PLG for Early SaaS Growth

What if I told you jumping into Product-Led Growth or hiring sales too early is holding your SaaS back?

I recently chatted with Jason Radisson, founder and CEO of Movo, about how he got his startup to the first $1 million in ARR.

Too many founders hire salespeople or turn to PLG, to avoid doing sales.

Jason realized that founder-led sales was crucial and the best way to deeply understand his target customers.

Here are 3 things I learned from that conversation:

1. Leverage Warm Intros:
Instead of wasting time on thousands of cold emails, use your network to make warm intros to key prospects.

2. Target the Right Type of Buyer:
A startup needs to target people with either (a) extreme pain or (b) early adopters open to new technology.

3. Build & Use Case Studies Early:
Instead of rattling of features and what you *could* do, show them what you actually did for other customers.

The takeaway?

You don’t have to be a "salesperson", but no one knows your product as well as you -- the founder -- don't ever forget that.

You can learn a lot from customer conversations and drive sales by just being a great problem-solver.

Not sure how to start? Start small:

  • Set aside 2-3 hours a week to talk to customers

  • Practice asking good questions and listening

  • Focus on how to help vs. how to sell

What’s one thing you do today to start a customer conversation?
