The Intercept - An urgent message from our CEO

The next time a billionaire sues The Intercept, will we have the resources to defend ourselves?

As The Intercept’s CEO, it’s my job to make sure we have the resources we need to publish independent nonprofit journalism.

So I’ll be honest: The prospect of a lawsuit from a billionaire like Erik Prince is daunting.

But we don’t back down. Not even in the face of legal threats from someone with such deep pockets. And that’s why no one at The Intercept hesitated when we were forced to spend $200,000 on legal fees defending against Prince’s lawsuit.

The next time a billionaire sues The Intercept, will we have the resources to defend ourselves? That’s up to our readers.

So far, readers have always had our back when we ask for support. But I never want this newsroom to shy away from an important investigation out of fear that it might become too expensive.

And that’s why, with just three days left in this month’s fundraising drive, we’re still asking readers like you to close the gap and help us meet the $400,000 September 30 goal. Please, don’t delay.

Thank you,

Annie Chabel
Chief Executive Officer
