Automattic CEO, Matt Mullenweg, and WP Engine had a public dispute (if you’re interested in the community/business tension of open source software, get the details here) and plenty of employees were quite unhappy with him about it. As a response, Automattic offered what they’re calling an “alignment offer”. AKA take the money or stay and stop complaining. The offer was 30k or six months of salary (whichever was higher) among other perks. 8.4% of staff accepted. Other companies have offered similar off ramps (see: Coinbase in 2020) during intense times of cultural struggle. I love these stark reminders that both:
