Trump's second term: look to Andrew Jackson in 1828

Lead story

In his first term as president, Donald Trump hung a portrait of Andrew Jackson in the Oval Office. Trump has won the 2024 presidential election, and for those wondering what’s next, that portrait of Jackson may be a hint.

While some who know White House history will liken Trump’s comeback to Richard Nixon’s disastrous second term, which ended with his resignation, Auburn University political scientist Spencer Goidel says that’s not the right comparison.

“Trump has already faced most of the situations that brought down Nixon − a congressional investigation and federal prosecutors’ inquiries,” writes Goidel.

Trump has survived by – “consciously or not” – following the example of Andrew Jackson, “another American president who created a political party in his own image and used it to rule almost unchecked,” Goidel says.

When he won election in 1828, “Jackson’s efforts created a political landscape that gave him broad power, including actions that bypassed institutional checks.” Those actions included the forced removal and relocation of Native American communities from their ancestral lands – the “Trail of Tears” – as well as disregarding judicial decisions and public outcry, using executive authority that appeared unconstrained.
