Canadian PM Trudeau Resigns

Embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party on Monday, though he'll remain in office until the party selects a replacement.

Trudeau became prime minister in 2015 and won re-election twice, but his party has seen a significant decline in voter popularity, polling as low as 16%. His resignation leaves a successor with only a few months to prepare for an electoral campaign.

The Liberal Party will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the next steps, but the party faces a surge in unpopularity due to economic and immigration issues. The Canadian Parliament will be "prorogued," or suspended, until March 24.

Trudeau's departure and decline in popularity coincided with polls indicating that his Liberal Party was likely to be defeated by the opposition Conservative Party in the upcoming election, expected by October.

Feds Sign Record $1 Billion Nuclear Power Deal

The federal government awarded Constellation Energy $1 billion in contracts to supply nuclear power to 13 federal agencies over 10 years, marking its largest energy purchase.

The deal will provide 10 million megawatt-hours to 80 federal facilities, including the Department of Transportation and Federal Reserve, starting April 25.

The U.S. General Services Administration cites increasing power demands from data centers and AI facilities as motivation for securing fixed electricity costs.

Nuclear power stocks surged following the announcement, with Constellation Energy rising 12% over two days.

Winter Storm Turns Deadly

The first major winter storm of the year impacted 62 million people across the U.S., resulting in at least four deaths and leaving 300,000 without power, and causing 2,000 flight cancellations.

The storm first hit the West Coast, where it spawned the first tornado of the year in California before extending eastward, dumping heavy snow and ice throughout the Plains, Midwest, and East Coast.

Six states—Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and Delaware—have reported over a foot of snow, with two locations in Kansas—Salina and Topeka, which received 18 inches.
