Did you notice something at the Golden Globes this year?

We’re not talking about the gowns. We’re talking about the women who wore them. About how many of them were over 50.

There was Nicole Kidman (57), who has been working nonstop for years now, taking every worthy job that lands on her desk — because she knows that she “can create jobs for people.”

And there was Pamela Anderson (57), who is reintroducing herself to the world after many decades of being pigeonholed by Hollywood.

And there was Kathy Bates (76). And Jennifer Coolidge (63). And Michelle Yeoh (62). And Jodie Foster (62).

And, of course, there was Demi Moore (62). Like many of these talented women, the industry tried for too long to put Demi in a box. To force her into retirement as soon as the laugh lines appeared. But, this past Sunday, she won her first major acting award ever. And she made sure everyone in that room knew that she’s back — and better than ever.

“30 years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a ‘popcorn actress,’” she said as she accepted her award. “And at that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged. And I bought in, and I believed that.”

“And that corroded me over time to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it,” Moore continued. “Maybe I was complete. Maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do. And as I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called ‘The Substance,’ and the universe told me that ‘you’re not done.’”

This week, we feel grateful to Demi — and all of her peers — for showing us what success can look like in our 50s, 60s, 70s — and beyond. For showing us that retirement eras can look different for everyone — and that you can forge the life you want, no matter your age.
