Nobody likes to take out the trash, but a good receptacle can make the chore less stinky. To find the very best kitchen trash cans, we’ve tested dozens of options over the past decade. We fitted each contender with bag after bag to see how securely they fit, we dumped 40 pounds of sandbags into each can to see how they handled the weight, and—perhaps most bravely—we left hard-boiled eggs and weeks-old tinned fish in each can for a sniff test. After an urban wildfire, serious health risks may still linger—even as the smoke clears and air quality index reads lower.
