Blue Origin layoffs: CEO cites ‘bureaucracy and less focus’

Big cuts at Blue Origin: “We grew and hired incredibly fast in the last few years, and with that growth came more bureaucracy and less focus than we needed,” said Dave Limp, CEO of the Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin space venture, as he announced 10% of the company’s workforce would be laid off. The cuts will impact about 1,400 employees at the Kent, Wash.-based company. Read more, including Limp’s memo to employees.

In other layoff news: Seattle-based real estate company Redfin is cutting 450 jobs as it announced plans to form a rentals-focused partnership with Zillow Group.

City of Seattle workers filed a class action lawsuit against the city over its handling of a payroll and human resources system upgrade that they claim resulted in numerous payroll errors. The complaint cites last fall’s switch to a system from business cloud software giant Workday, which the city concedes has been challenging. Read more.
