Note - there is no sync between devices! That seems like a big drawback to me.

Forum with 2.6M posts being deleted due to UK Online Safety Act

With the impeding full implementation of the 2023 online safety act, it looks like HEXUS forums will have to close, or at least downgrade to read only.

The act will require a vast amount of work to be done on behalf of the Forums and there is no-one left with the availability to do it

This is a great shame, but since the main site closed a while ago it was only a matter of time before something like this would catch up with us.

I would like to thank David for running the site (until that main part closure), and all the admins, mods and members for their contributions, it's been a blast folks !

Benchmarking VLMs vs. Traditional OCR

Are LLMs a total replacement for traditional OCR models? It's been an increasingly hot topic, especially with models like Gemini 2.0 becoming cost competitive with traditional OCR.

Overall VLMs performance matched or exceeded most traditional OCR providers. The most notable performance gains were in documents with charts/infograpics, handwriting, or complex input fieds (i.e. checkboxes, highlighted fields). VLMs are also more predictable on photos and low quality scans. They are generally more capable of "looking past the noise" of scan lines, creases, watermarks. Traditional models tend to outperform on high-density pages (textbooks, research papers) as well as common document formats like tax forms.
