Senate Votes to Avoid Shutdown

The Senate voted 54-46 and passed a six-month funding bill Friday, averting a government shutdown hours ahead of the midnight deadline.

Sen. Rand Paul was the lone GOP dissenter, while nearly all Democrats opposed the bill, except for Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, with Independent Sen. Angus King voting in favor. The bill required only 51 votes.

Earlier, 10 Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, provided the necessary votes to clear a procedural hurdle, drawing condemnation from other party members.

The bill is now before President Donald Trump who is expected to sign it into law.

Report: Consumer Confidence Drops

Consumer confidence dropped this month as Americans expressed growing concerns over tariffs, slumping markets, and a potential recession, according to survey results released Friday.

The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index reported confidence fell 10.5% percent to 57.9, marking the lowest level for the index since November 2022.

Companies have also noted a shift in consumer behavior, warning investors and retailers that first-quarter sales are weaker than expected and the rest of the year may fall short of projections.

Concerns rattled the commodity market Friday, pushing gold to a record $3,004.86 per ounce, up 14% this year as investors seek a safe haven.

Former Sen. Alan Simpson Dead at 93

Former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson, a moderate conservative known for his wit, bipartisan outreach, and immigration reform, died Friday at 93.

Simpson, who served as a Wyoming senator from 1979 to 1997, was a key figure in rallying GOP senators around the party’s agenda, known for his caustic views, humor, and tackling tough issues. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022.

After leaving the Senate, Simpson taught at Harvard University and the University of Wyoming, urging students to be politically involved.

Former President George W. Bush called Simpson “one of the finest public servants ever to have graced our nation’s capital.”
