Product Work Beyond Product-Market Fit

Not all product work is the same. There are different types, which each require different execution strategies and success metrics. It's important to identify the type of product work you're trying to do first so you don't run the risk of oversimplifying your growth strategy. Here are the four distinct kinds of product work, and how you should tackle each one differently.

 Business

The Quora Team Is Going Remote First

Quora's CEO Adam D'Angelo released a public letter this past week announcing that the company will be remote first effective immediately. His rationale makes a ton of sense, and I anticipate many other tech companies in San Francisco—and around the country—will soon follow suit. Check out his thoughtfully written letter about what remote first will look like for the company.

Netflix Is Straight Up Flexing at This Point

While the film industry has almost completely halted, Netflix is about to release almost 60 original titles in July alone. They've placed such a heavy emphasis on original content over the past decade, and don't anticipate slowing down production, even during the pandemic. The entertainment giant has been preparing for this moment for years—and now, when its competitors are grappling with COVID delays, Netflix is full speed ahead. At least we won't run out of things to watch this year

The Ultimate Guide to Negotiation for Product Managers

We don't often associate negotiation with product managers, but it's a huge part of the unspoken job description. PMs are constantly negotiating with company leadership, cross-functional teams, and new hires. This is one of the most comprehensive guides I've seen on how to negotiate well and influence with authority. If you're a PM, this is worth bookmarking.

Email has such an interesting history. It hasn't changed massively since its invention in 1965, but that hasn't been for lack of trying. This is a fascinating write up about the evolution of email, how it has become a status symbol, and the way it's changed the development of software features in general. What do you think is in store for the future of email?

 Marketing & Sales
Is Your Website Stressing Out Visitors?

Have you ever landed on a website and felt immediately overwhelmed? I know I have. There are many way a website can cause visitors stress—from slow loading times to overwhelming navigations. If you notice your bounce rates increasing, you may want to consider ways you can "de-stress" your site. This is a great list of suggestions. My favorite: remove excess noise.

The Secret Formulas Behind Great Marketing

I've talked to plenty of entrepreneurs over the years that considered marketing an afterthought. Many believe good products market themselves, and to some extent, that's true. But, marketing is incredibly important early on and as you try to reach new customer bases over time. This is a great list of ideas for growing the top of your funnel through thoughtful, authentic marketing

 Growth

Stop Thinking About Marketing as a Funnel

The best marketers think less about creating marketing funnels, and more about creating marketing loops. This list of seven growth loops will help you think differently about your marketing efforts moving forward. A few of the ones I've found most effective are embedded loops and financial viral loops. What are a few you can experiment with this year?

How to Notify Users Without Being Spammy

Email is an incredibly effective way to engage with your audience, but it's all too easy to be spammy and lose both their engagement and trust. This is a great guide to sending respectful email notifications that actually work. Here are two of my favorites: create an "anti-stalker" segment, and sync with other departments to minimize email overlaps.

 Management
How to Disagree With the Rest of Management

I found this interesting thread on Hacker News recently. It presents an interesting question about how senior management should operate and interact within a company. Should they avoid conflict and disagreement—especially in front of other employees? Or, should they have more of an obligation to dissent? The responses are illuminating, and I think this is a worthwhile read for anyone in a management or leadership position

Are Our Management Theories Outdated?

Even before work as we know it changed this year, I got the feeling management principles were growing stale and required some evolution. This article put words to my instincts. The author of this piece argues for truly human management that makes room not just for our intellect and skills, but also our bodies and spirits. This is a prescient perspective we should all take into consideration as we think about the evolution of our businesses and management practices in the coming months and years.

 Tip of the Week

Doing inner work to know, accept, and improve yourself is an ongoing, never-ending process. On this week's episode of The Startup Chat, Steli and I dive deeper into our own experiences with inner work, and the lessons we've learned along the way. A few of the major things I've come to realize: your strengths can be your weaknesses (and vice versa), who you are today will change over time, and there is no point of ultimate self-mastery at the end of the tunnel. .
