It’s one of many stories we bring you as part of a new series this week looking at how the coronavirus is widening gaps for vulnerable children across the country. That includes twice-hit New Orleans students, Native American youth and the children of essential workers.

We also bring you an investigation of our nation’s troubled child care system, hear from a science teacher who worries about being stopped by police and mistaken for a suspect, and take a closer look at police education during this volatile time. Critical Condition: The Students the Pandemic Hit Hardest 

The coronavirus pandemic closed schools and launched a national experiment in remote learning that has been chaotic and stressful for millions of American families. But in some households, the shift to homeschool was particularly catastrophic.
