Special Report: Thousands of U.S. judges who broke laws, oaths remained on the bench

Article
  • Hayes is among thousands of state and local judges across America who were allowed to keep positions of extraordinary power and prestige after violating judicial ethics rules or breaking laws they pledged to uphold, a Reuters investigation found.
  • Reporters identified another 3,613 cases from 2008 through 2018 in which states disciplined wayward judges but kept hidden from the public key details of their offenses - including the identities of the judges themselves.
  • All told, 9 of every 10 judges were allowed to return to the bench after they were sanctioned for misconduct, Reuters determined.
  • In Indiana, three judges attending a conference last spring got drunk and sparked a 3 a.m. brawl outside a White Castle fast-food restaurant that ended with two of the judges shot.
  • The judge, Cullman District Court's Kim Chaney, remained on the bench for three years after being accused of violating the same nepotism rules he was tasked with enforcing on the oversight commission.
  • SPECIAL RULES FOR JUDGES. Most states afford judges accused of misconduct a gentle kind of justice.
  • "If judges think it's fair and appropriate to investigate others for crimes or misconduct without providing those subjects or targets with copies of witness statements and subpoenas, why don't judges think it's fair to investigate judges in the same way?".

Uber's New Strategy: Buy Unprofitable Companies Like Postmates, ???, Profit

Article
  • After Uber's merger talks with food-delivery company Grubhub fell apart, Uber has now set its sights on Postmates, according to the New York Times.
  • Uber Eats, the ride-hailing company's food-delivery unit, is just as unprofitable as the rest of Uber's business operations, but that hasn't stopped the company from reportedly offering $2.6 billion to takeover Postmates.
  • Uber has been searching for ways to stay afloat during the pandemic as its core ride-hailing business has collapsed and its business model of misclassifying driver-employees as independent contractors to save on labor costs is coming under increased scrutiny in California and nationwide.
  • In its Q1 earnings call, Uber reported that rides were down over 80 percent and it had recorded an eye-watering loss of $2.9 billion, but there was a bright spot: food-delivery was up by 54 percent since last year.
  • In March, Rideshare Drivers United, an app-based driver advocacy group in California, released a wage claim tool to let drivers claim stolen wages and unpaid business expenses; a mere 4,000 Uber and Lyft drivers have filed claims in excess of $1 billion.
  • Last year, there were well over half a million Uber and Lyft drivers last year and reports have pegged Uber's annual driver retention rate at around 4 percent.
  • Uber is now interested in Postmates, which only enjoys 8 percent of the US market share and will now have to decide between going public or risking an acquisition that could raise antitrust concerns.

FCC formally declares Huawei, ZTE ‘national security threats' – TechCrunch

Article
  • FCC chairman Ajit Pai said that the "Weight of evidence" supported the decision.
  • In November of last year, the FCC announced that companies deemed a national security threat would be ineligible to receive any money from the Universal Service Fund.
  • Huawei and ZTE were "Initially designated" as security threats at the time, but the formal process of assigning them that status has taken place in the intervening months, resulting in today's declaration.
  • The rule from November only now applies to USF spending on the companies, an FCC representative explained.
  • In a public statement, FCC commissioner Geoffrey Starks, a Democrat, explained that labeling the companies threats is a start, but that there is a great deal of Huawei and ZTE equipment already in use that needs to be identified and replaced.
  • The declaration is the latest move by the FCC to crack down on Chinese technology providers seen.
  • Spokespeople for Huawei and ZTE did not immediately comment.

Telework may save U.S. jobs in COVID-19 downturn, especially among college graduates

Link

While many workers could no longer wait tables or give haircuts, others – especially those with college degrees – could go online and continue to teach, deliver sermons or trade stocks.
