FiveMinuteFounder - [FMF #77] the anti-A/B-test framework

Hi friend,

You know what really kills bootstrapped businesses?

Lack of momentum.

If you don't build and maintain momentum in your business, then it's only a matter of time before you run out of money, time, or motivation.

And you know what kills momentum like nothing else?

Spending your time and energy on tasks and decisions that don't really move the needle.

You know, the kind of decision you might be tempted to A/B test.

Now don't get me wrong... A/B tests are great when used properly.

But - in the first 18 months of your business - they're almost never a good use of your time...

  • ... you won't have enough data to get a significant result quickly

  • ... just the very fact that it's a close enough decision to A/B test means that it isn't worth spending time on right now

So what should you do instead?

Well, I don't know the solution. But here's my solution...

Today, I want to share my anti-A/B-test framework with you.

It's a quick, easy way to kickstart your momentum by guaranteeing you focus only on the important decisions.

First though, my top three interesting links of the week:

⭐ A space opened up again for my Social Proof Workshop this August (someone booked and then realised they're on holiday). It's first come first served!

⭐ The first ever 'listener questions' episode of my Sales for Founders podcast went live this week. I answer questions on sales mindset, cold outreach, positioning and more.

⭐ Want free advertising for your SaaS product? HelpFounders will match you up with podcasters - for free - to get you a free shoutout.

Right. Let's jump in...

Here's the anti-A/B-test framework:

anti-ab-test-framework

You can use it to keep momentum high and avoid falling into the trap of spending time and energy on 'low importance' decisions.

It's perfect when you're facing a decision/task where...

  • ... there are 2+ options

  • ... neither is the 'obvious' winner

  • ... getting the decision wrong can't ruin your business overnight

And it really works.

I'm the kind of nerd who loves agonising over marketing copy and design.

So I use this framework to help me focus down fast on only the really important decisions when I'm building a new business.

Give it a try - you'll be surprised how much wasted time and energy it can save you too!

That's all for this week.

Stay safe and healthy out there 🤗
