Issue 189 — July 12, 2020

Nintendo Switch - Photo by Sigmund

Hi, issue #189 of your weekly round-up here, with the Nintendo news you need to see.

Rambling thoughts incoming: Is it just me, or do Nintendo seem to be doing a poor job of managing expectations of late, no doubt in part due to the Coronavirus outbreak and the move to working from home. Sure, some companies are going to navigate this shift better than others, but it’s starting to show that Nintendo’s usual slick communications — the one that we’ve all come increasingly comfortable and excited by over the past three years, is looking a little rough around the edges of late.

The lack of a full-on Direct is one thing, but this is joined by a seemingly piecemeal approach to news? The rest of Nintendo’s 2020 line-up is largly unknown. Beyond Paper Mario, and a peek at a new Pokemon Snap (which honestly is a big saving grace here) there is little else known.

Yes this rambling came about due to the Bakugan Treehouse thing — a solid showing of what's on deck for the second half of the year, communicated with the usual style and positivity please!

Anway, big thanks for the replies to my first Question of the Week, responses are in the issue below. Just under 20 games games dropping on the eShop next week, including Paper Mario!

Thanks for reading,
Chris ✌️

Nintendo Treehouse - Paper Mario: The Origami King Gameplay — A half hour of gameplay from Nintendo themselves. Out this week.

Nintendo // YouTube

Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia, a new Switch exclusive from Wayforward— I had no idea what a Bakugan was.

Wesley Yin-Poole // Eurogamer

REVIEW Deadly Premonition 2 has plenty of B-movie charm, but its performance is a bad joke — This sequel "gleefully expands the world of a cult classic, but it has major shortcomings". Chris Scullion writing for VGC said it was a "buggy mess", but ones that fans will still love anyway.

Alex Donaldson // VG247

REVIEW Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town — This farming sim remaster takes the original and with "new additions and streamlining made an already fantastic experience on the GBA into a near-perfect one on the Switch".

Jaime Carrillo // Pure Nintendo

REVIEW Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 — A "hallmark of excellence" that the author kept coming back to for another playthrough. Classic Castlevania vibes with a modern co-op twist.

Jordan Devore // Destructoid

REVIEW Superliminal — This mind-bending visual puzzler shares an "exceptionally powerful" message. It's short (which is increasingly a plus-point for me) and is said to appeal to Portal fans.

Ollie Reynolds // Nintendo Life

Pokémon Snap had a different kind of focus— Despite not being a Pokemon fan, the author shares how Nintendo's photo safari game had a deeper impact on their career than they ever would have expected. It's described as "escapist tourism without pressure".

Marc Williamson // gamesindustry

💬 Question of the Week

Last week I asked you to email me with your thoughts on Ninjala. Thanks to all of you who dropped me a message. Here's what you had to say:

"..a fun, bright game, with a good concept behind it. However, without a steady stream of new content, it's likely to fall off quickly" — WyWyGuy

Raye wasn't a fan saying she'll "probably uninstall it", adding that Splatoon is fun even when you're losing - not the case here.

Andrew noted that it's fun but his time with it was "a stark reminder" that he's too old to play competitive games now.

Dhairya likes it, simply calling it "dope".
