editor's note

Hi ,

Over the past 6 months, I’ve formed a deep relationship with Milton’s multi-grain crackers, have melted ~a lot~ of shredded Cabot cheddar on Triscuits, and bowed at the altar of Extra Toasty Cheez-Its. I’ve eaten chocolate chips at 10:23am and peanut crunch at 2:44pm. A lot of leftovers have been doused with Tapatío, or sprinkled with dal biji or za’atar. I’ve put quite the range of foodstuffs inside a tortilla and I’ve rekindled my love for frozen pierogies (yes, I love Mrs. T’s, okay?).

During this omg-wow-it-really-can-keep-getting-worse pandemic, people have discussed a lot about the concept of time: how it moves slowly, how it’s hard to find things to look forward to, how getting through the day is sometimes about just getting through an hour.

Which is where, for me, the snacks come in. I could argue that it’s actually healthier for me to create a new cracker combo than to continue to doomscroll. When you have condiments (jam! harissa! tahini! hot sauce!) + carbs (crackers! bread! tortillas! pita!) + a form of dairy (butter! yogurt! cheese!), you have endless kitchen grazing potential.

This weekend, my husband and I invited another couple over for a “heavy snacks” socially distant backyard hang. Yes, partially because 4pm seemed too early to call it “dinner” but also because isn’t heavy snacks what we could all use right now? A choose-your-own-adventure assortment of options feels strangely freeing (at least culinarily) from the myopia of the day-to-day right now. On the menu: roasted chickpeas, mini lamb meatballs, and yogurt sauce. Maybe also a vegetable. Definitely peanut butter pie.

I’d love to hear about your snacking journeys. What have you newly discovered, what’s your chip of choice, what do you eat at 3:07am when you can’t sleep? Whatever your version is, I hope you feel great about it—there’s definitely no “guilty pleasure” here, just actual pleasure.

Yours in crumbs and condiments,

what to explore this weekend

  1. If you miss everyday conversations with friends... 👯‍♀️ "It’s been hard to find time to schedule full life catch-ups with friends lately. Recently, I realized I miss everyday conversations. So I've been texting my friends on my afternoon walks, 'Can I call you in five minutes for five minutes'" and the response rate has been 100% yes so far. It feels nice to make time to talk about something small too.” - Alisha, GNI Team

  2. What to do with all those chocolate chips in your pantry... 🍪 "Okay, so when I'm not snacking on them ad hoc, I promise I put my chocolate chips to more wholesome use. This chocolate chip cookie recipe was so good I had three for breakfast yesterday." - Carey, GNI Team

  3. For beauty products by Mother Nature herself...🌿 tarte Cosmetics was built on the idea that good-for-you, naturally derived ingredients are central to high-performing makeup. Now, it's your turn to try. Today is the last day that GNI readers can get 30% off best-selling tarte products as part of their friends and family sale, and US-based readers can claim a free Clean Queen Hand Sanitizer with a $55+ purchase. #SPONSORSTHING
  4. If you can't stand the heat... "I've been extra grateful for my little bedside fan on these particularly hot DC days! I recently also saw one that I'm eyeing for my desk and workspace. In the midst of all this time at home, these fans and a cooling gravity blanket (I saw they were on sale this week) are key to a good night's sleep for me." - Olivia, GNI Team

  5. If you have Zoom fatigue... 🙅‍♀️ "I recommend wearing your emotions on your sleeve, with this cap that really puts it all out there." - Katrina, GNI Team

  6. If you're buying weird stuff right now... 👀 you're not alone. "Last week, we wrote about our unconventional quarantine purchases, and asked about yours too. This thread, including everything from kitchen gadgets to disco balls, sparked some major joy. " - Jenna, GNI Team
  7. A new favorite follow... "This gorgeous art account is my favorite thing on Instagram right now. I stop nearly every time a new still life floats across my feed, and I love seeing all the different interpretations of each week's subject." - Tyler, GNI Team

Introducing: A little twist on Fridays... 💫

Anyone else feeling like it's more important than ever to give yourself small moments of joy to look forward to each Friday? This month, in partnership with Spindrift sparkling water, we're greeting each weekend with the intention of having a little bit more fun — even while staying close to home. This week's plan: Host a virtual cocktail-making happy hour with friends.

Pairs well with: A Grapefruit Aperol Spritz.

Here's how to pull it off:
Step 1) Text the group chat. Pick a time to catch up this weekend.
Step 2) Introduce the theme of mocktail- or cocktail-making, where each person will be asked to share some tips on making their summer beverage of choice.
Step 3) Teach your friends to make a Grapefruit Aperol Spritz using the following instructions...

Add a fair amount of ice to a glass, followed by equal parts Aperol and prosecco. Top with a Spindrift Grapefruit and a wedge of fresh grapefruit for garnish.

When you buy a Spindrift Drifter Pack* this month, you get a free pack to send to a friend (for the next time you virtual cheers!). What's included in the Drifter Pack: Every flavor of Spindrift (there are 11 flavors), plus a bonus pineapple to celebrate its recent release. 🍍

What We’re Watching: 🎥
"Strong Black Lead made an announcement this week that filled me with so much nostalgia — some late '90s/early 2000s favorites (that center Black women, in particular) are coming to Netflix in the next couple months: Moesha, Girlfriends, The Game, The Parkers, One on One, Half & Half, and Sister Sister." - Tyler, GNI Team

What We're Listening to: 🎧
"It's finally here. Former First Lady Michelle Obama's new podcast came out this week — and I love that it centers on relationships and the people that mean the most to us. Those are the conversations I want to hear right now, as we navigate this tricky time far from (or super close to) the ones we love." - Jenny, GNI Team

"Folklore." - Signed, Several Members of the GNI Team. (Also please tell us your top 3 favorite songs from the album here. We're very invested.)

What We’re Wearing: 🌿
"I am in LOVE with my Alex Mill shirtdress for work from home days when I want to feel a little more put together (tbh it's a great Monday dress right now). Also, I talked to their team recently about how my style is taking shape lately, and some of my earliest influences (including Limited Too 😂). You can read it here." - Alisha, GNI Team

How We're Moving: 🏃‍♀️
"I've been having some extreme roller rink nostalgia lately, and I think this is going to be my next exercise frontier during these weird times. I've been eyeing both inline skates and rollerskate options (these are a little slower but also a lot cuter and easier to manage?) and after thorough research have landed on either this sleek pair or this this slightly dreamier set. Okay, also maybe these if I win the lottery." - Olivia, GNI Team
