A Fantastical New Showroom for a Pair of Longtime Designers

Joyful Maximalism
South Etna Montauk recently debuted a new exhibition titled “Mass Ornament: Pleasure, Play, and What Lies Beneath.” Curated by Alison M. Gingeras, who designed the installation alongside artist Katie Stout, the exhibition was inspired by philosopher Siegfried Kracauer. According to the gallery, it is a 21st-century exploration of pleasure and ornamentations, and the works “favor maximalism: seductive surfaces, brilliant colors, exuberant patterns, and baroque forms.”

Rural Creations
Patrick Parrish Gallery has opened “Homelife,” the second solo exhibition at the gallery by Oregon-based artist Julian Watts. The exhibition explores “the idea of the home and how it functions as a poetic, living landscape,” through carved wooden pieces derived primarily from salvaged hardwoods from western Oregon. A percentage of sales from “Homelife” will be donated to True Colors United, an organization that seeks to end homelessness, specifically focusing on LGBTQ+ youth.

Folksy Drawings
On September 15, Fort Gansevoort will open an online exhibition titled “Interiors,” a collection of drawings spanning the career of Vermont-based artist Gayleen Aiken (1934–2005). From the gallery: “Her images convey an undeniable tension beneath the surface of Vermont’s sylvan landscape.” The exhibit was organized in collaboration with filmmaker and photographer Laurie Simmons.
