9K Diamond Discovery | From Gymnast To Champion | Free Calls For Inmates

Hello and welcome to a new edition of the Upturn.

Like
many others across the world, I was saddened by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but the ensuing celebration of her life and her achievements has been both heartwarming and inspiring.

Her tenacity and her
commitment to dissent, to stand up for what she thought was right even when this wasn’t the majority’s opinion, will continue to inspire generations to come.

More stories about
people making a difference below.

In the
Upside, an athlete’s journey from top gymnast to underserved communities’ champion and a disabled entrepreneur’s big ambition for an entertainment industry accessible to all.

In
Up-And-Coming, founders of a small business find a lifeline and pay it forward and America’s wealthiest billionaire opens a pre-school.

In
Uplift, an Arkansas man finds a diamond in the rough (literally!) and a new non-profit seeks to connect prison inmates with their loved ones, for free.

Finally, in the
Wrap-Up, the numbers having an impact this week are 3, 5, and 500.

Keely Cat-Wells thought the answer to increase disability representation in the entertainment industry was to help actors with disabilities get their break by starting a talent agency. But structural barriers on set and stage remain a challenge, so she has now set her eye on a more ambitious goal: the launch of film studio designed with accessibility in mind.

The Wrap-up

3 - months it took the Ocean Cleanup Group to remove more than 126 tons of marine plastic from beaches in Bali.

5 - statues honoring women—real and fictional—overshadowed by their brothers installed in the U.K. as part of a Netflix campaign to promote its film Enola Holmes.

500 - additional students Princeton University will be able to accommodate thanks to the donation of alumni Kwanza Jones and José Feliciano. The dorms will bear their donors’ names in an effort to improve diversity representation at the Ivy League institution.
