Into the Archive: Travel Back in Time to October Issues Past
Into the Archive: Here’s What the October Issue Has Looked Like Throughout the Years Hopefully, you're by now well acquainted with our current October issue (check out the cover story here). To further usher in the new month, we’re taking a look back through the AD Archive at a handful of past October editions in order to share with you some of their best and most fascinating features.
In 2010, AD served up an October issue that was able to please individuals on both ends of the stylistic spectrum. For starters, a classic Santa Barbara home that drew on colonial and farmhouse references was a clear show-stopper. Elsewhere, AD100 Robert Stern memorably explained to readers what exactly made for Shingle Style, in his opinion. But it was two modernist retreats, on Shelter and Fishers Islands respectively, that may have most given page flippers reason to pause. Alternatively glassy and color-saturated, they are testaments to the potential longevity of a great home. South African writer J.M. Coetzee—known in part for his anti-apartheid literary efforts—published a short story in the October 2000 issue of AD. Titled “A House in Spain,” it appeared in the magazine just three years before he won the Nobel Prize in recognition of his overall oeuvre. More striking still for literature affianadoes may have been the issue’s inclusion of Marcel Proust’s childhood home—which informed so much of his epic meditation on memory. And yet, from AD100 architect Annabelle Selldorf’s London sourcing tips, (written while she was also still largely focused on working as a decorator), to a New York garden pavilion designed by Philip Johnson, this 2000 edition of AD was hardly short on features geared solely toward to design. A seaside resort in Mexico appeared on this cover, proving that it’s never too early to start meditating on a warm weather winter vacation. Inside the issue, an idyllic English country house showcased a decidedly different type of escape—albeit one equally dreamy. Interiors aside, architecture and the decorative arts also received strong billing in this edition of AD, thanks to a spotlight on a Mies Van Der Rohe landmark and an examination of contemporary British and American ceramics. The October 1980 issue of AD was a veritable tour de force. From its picturesque fall kitchen cover to the first house legendary postmodernist architect Robert Venturi constructed in Bermuda, there was quite literally something in it for everyone. The highly floral and presciently ‘80s Beverly Hills home of one talk show host stood out, as did the historic house just outside Paris in which John Cocteau lived. Nevertheless, it was an essay by famed fashion editor Diana Vreeland that arguably stole the spotlight. Recalling her coverage of interiors for Vogue, her life spent living in Paris, London, and New York, and her “old friend Billy Baldwin,” Vreeland infused her piece with countless charming and informative tidbits. 1977: A Palatial Madrid Home Graces the Cover, While Winston Churchill’s Country Estate Hides InsideIn the late 1970s, AD expanded the number of issues it published per year to include an October edition. The stunning central hall of designer Paco Muñoz’s Spanish home—seen here—graced this early October cover. That grand welcome was rivaled only by the issue’s contents, which included a feature of Winston Churchill’s country estate, Chartwell. Its accompanying article made good use of one of the legendary Prime Minister’s lesser-known quotes: “A day away from Chartwell is a day wasted.” Trouble viewing?
