Super Mario Sunshine Ukiyo-e by Asif Intesar

Hey, here's issue #201 of Switch Weekly with the latest on all things Nintendo. Hope you're enjoying your Sunday.

First off, I just want to say thanks to all of you who got in touch last week with kind words about the newsletter hitting issue 200. Really means a lot to know that you're enjoying what I'm doing with this email.

This week, I've been playing a ton of Super Mario Bros. 35, it launched (for Switch Online members) on Thursday, and I've been trying to nab a first place win ever since. It's so interesting to me how you can take a 35-year old game and tweak it, and the way in which you approach playing it changes compeletly. At first I was trying to speedrun each attempt, but quickly realised that is useless, and you can actually be pretty tactical in how you approach things. In fact, we're talking about such tactics in the Switch Weekly Discord if you want to share tips or pick up tricks.

So, the big news this week has to be the addition of Minecraft Steve to Smash Bros. right? Long rumoured, and now confirmed, the character is a solid addition, and looks to have a very interesting moveset. Steve is so visually different to the rest of the roster - like Mr. Game & Watch - it's great to see something so contrasting.

Next, a little reminder that this month Community patrons are playing through Donkey Kong Country 2 — if you're interested in joining us you can find details here.

Over 30 games are landing on the store next week, the full list of upcoming games is below as usual.

Finally, the artwork above is via Asif Intesar. I spotted this awesome, somewhat Ukiyo-e style, Super Mario Sunshine piece over on Reddit and Asif kindly agreed to let me share it with you here today, so please do go drop a like over on Instagram. Thanks again Asif!

Enjoy the issue,
Chris ✌️

Mr. Sakurai Presents "Steve & Alex" — This vid is a detailed look (around 45-mins) at the seventh DLC character being added to Smash. A Minecraft rep is a sound choice, as Sakurai said himself: it's the World's best selling game. It's kinda crazy the amount of work that has had to go into this, such as adding digging mechanics to every stage in the game. Oh, this video also announces Bomberman and Travis Touchdown being added as Mii Costumes, which is neat. Finally, If you'd rather just watch the 3-minute Minecraft Steve character reveal trailer, that's here, and the official blog from Minecraft-maker Mojang is here.

REVIEW Super Mario Bros. 35 — I'm really into this Battle Royale Mario and it seems yer man Scullion agrees saying it "gives Nintendo's most iconic game a jolt of life". However Kyle Orland, writing for Ars Technica, noted that it's too repetitive, and wasn't as taken by this refreshed take on Nintendo's classic.

Chris Scullion  // Nintendo Life

REVIEW Alwa's Legacy — This Metroidvania is said to be filled with clever puzzles, and "when everything clicks into place, Alwa’s Legacy soars.".

Neal Ronaghan  // Nintendo World Report

REVIEW Ys Origin — Offering "brilliant and compulsive dungeon crawling gameplay" this formative entry in the series is an "easy recommendation to pretty much anyone who has an interest in RPGs, [..] perfect even if you've never touched a game in the series before".

Stuart Gipp // Nintendo Life

The ecological dilemma of Super Mario Sunshine— Nintendo's platformer "shows players the importance of preserving rare ecosystems and how fickle and easy it is to ruin them with greed and selfishness".

Tiago Franco // PWR

Let's debate the merits of Super Mario Sunshine

Zack Zwiezen & Ari Notis // Kotaku

How can an Astral Chain sequel improve on the original?

Chirag Pattni // Nintendo Enthusiast

Why everyone's horny for Hades

Ash Parrish // Kotaku
