Trump Ready To Rally | The $1.2 Billion Succession | Coinbase's Culture War

Good morning.

The
dates of the next presidential debates remain the subject of fierce discussion between the Republican and Democratic teams, as President Trump, backed by the White House physician, insists he is healthy enough to resume in-person campaigning even though the recommended 14-day self-isolation period has yet to elapse.

Trump’s handling of the virus
raised doubts within his own party—Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he hasn’t been to the White House since August due to “different” approaches—while House Democrats plan to hold a discussion about the 25th amendment, which deals with succession plans in the event the president is incapacitated.

As the discussion rages, the country’s top infectious diseases official, Dr Anthony Fauci, reminded people to
take the disease seriously: “How could it be a trivial outbreak if it's already killed 210,000 people in the United States and a million people worldwide?”

What Else To Know Now

The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Yale University, alleging discrimination against white and Asian-American students in its admissions process.

The media mogul running Bild, Die Welt and Business Insider just got $1.2 billion richer, thanks to the Springer family’s plan to “ensure continuity” at the publisher. Now come the taxes.

Top Take-Aways

Shortly after armed protesters gathered outside Michigan State Capitol in May to oppose Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home order aimed at containing the spread of coronavirus, a group of men began plotting to kidnap the governor. The FBI put an end to those plans this week, while Biden pointed to Trump’s “LIBERATE MICHIGAN” April tweet as an example of inflammatory language.

Democrats raised
$15 million in just over 12 hours after the start of Wednesday night’s vice presidential debate—a sign that Senator Kamala Harris’ performance against Vice President Mike Pence resonated with at least some of the more than 50 million viewers who tuned in to watch the debate.

British naturalist Sir David Attenborough has joined forces with Prince William to
launch the Earthshot Prize, a global environment award to help tackle some of the world’s biggest environmental challenges. To see Attenborough at work, his latest documentary is streaming on Netflix, to critical acclaim.

The
World Food Program, a UN agency, won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of their efforts to fight hunger.

For
2 million Americans suffering from OCD, a diagnosis and treatment can be hard to come by. Digital health startup NOCD, which specializes in this particular condition, has raised $12 million to expand its services to all 50 states.

The European Union secured
up to 500,000 treatment courses of Gilead’s antiviral drug remdesivir just as some countries began experiencing shortages due to a rise in Covid-19 infections. Final results in the drug’s trial show it helps patients recover faster, but it didn’t find a statistically significant reduction in deaths.

A recent survey of nursing home residents helps paint a picture of
what life has been like for those living in such facilities during the pandemic—the resulting story is a grim one, of isolation and loneliness.

San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase imposed a no-social-activism policy on its employees—
if they didn’t agree, they could leave. So far, 60 employees (about 5% of the total workforce) have opted for the exit package, and the final number could be higher still.
