Bi Visibility Day, A climate newsletter, Legal fellow at Reproductive Freedom Project

Welcome to The Bloom, a newsletter to bloom into your best self! Enjoy these small seeds of joy with an intersectional feminist lens.

Breonna Taylor decision sparks demonstrations across the US: Activists come together on the streets, through poetry and art, and sermons in response to the heartbreaking outcome: justice has not been served for Breonna Taylor. For many, the heartbreak was compounded by the fact that, despite mounting national attention and pressure, the outcome was, simply put, unsurprising. It had crushed cautious hopes that this case could have spurred change, particularly for Black women. >> Full Story

Philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler artfully dismantles trans-exclusionary feminism and JK Rowling: In a new interview, Butler – a leading feminist best known for her book Gender Trouble – makes it clear that she is 100% not here for the feminists that exclude trans women. The interview is a breath of fresh air in a stale debate – a case of someone very smart talking about issues with real insight. >> Full Story

Women as peacebuilders in Thailand's south: The image of women in Thailand’s deep south is shifting from victim to peace activist, according to new human rights research. Women have become the backbone of ground-level efforts to build peace, organising groups to help victims of the conflict, and to reduce tensions between security forces and local communities, and act as mediators. >> Full Story

This week many around the world celebrated Bi Visibility Day! Get smarter in seconds with a video on bisexuality and read a fascinating opinion piece on one woman's journey in understanding her sexuality: "When I was still closeted and questioning, I turned to the internet for guidance and ended up on Reddit’s r/bisexual subreddit. It was validating to see how many other people felt the same confusion I did over whether they were “bi enough,” and I was pleasantly surprised by how overwhelmingly supportive the community was..."

Emily Atkin is one of the most preeminent chroniclers of climate change, best known for founding the daily climate newsletter HEATED. In a recent newsletter, she put one of the so-far hottest years on record into perspective, with photos of the devastation in Brazil, Greece, Argentina, Indonesia, and Bulgaria.

Zendaya won an Emmy for her role in Euphoria, a notable achievement since she is the youngest person and the second Black woman (after Viola Davis) to earn an Emmy for lead actress in a drama series.

Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza breaks down her activism career in an inspiring new video. From her earliest days of advocating for female reproductive rights at the age of 12 to her Facebook post in 2014 that sparked a political and social movement, Alicia has built an inspiring world around her.

'Enola Holmes' is a new fiery feminist film about Sherlock Holmes' sister.

Naomi Osaka’s impressive accomplishments and inspiring passion for racial justice earned her a spot in Time magazine 100 Most Influential People in 2020. Maya Moore, a champion WNBA player and Olympian athlete, wrote Osaka’s blurb and highlighted the “use [of] her gifts and talents, her voice and her platform, to honor the preciousness of Black and brown lives. It took humility and grace to point beyond what she was doing, winning on one of the biggest stages in her craft, at something more important.”

Two women in USA and Japan set a challenge to go 72 hours with no trash, and they documented the whole thing. Their vlogs are really fascinating looks into consumerism in two different countries, and just how difficult it can be to go zero-waste.

Lizzo answers 73 questions for Vogue – in the interview she shares hilarious hiking stories, gives advice for other "Black girl nerds", and reminisces about a "summer of silence" she had in her 20s, borne primarily out of shame around dropping out of college and not pursuing flute,

In Istanbul’s public baths, the writer Leslie Jamison learned what we gain from being physically among strangers — and what’s lost in the pandemic when we come to fear them. At the end of February, before the lockdowns, she flew to Istanbul to experience its legendary hammams. Visiting six baths in 36 hours, she wondered if the Western obsession with Turkish baths, in all its fantasizing and fetishizing, has been in part an attempt to claim pleasure as something more than indulgence, more like a mode of survival. Pain claims so much of us; why not give pleasure its due when we can?

Diversifying sources of knowledge can be quite the challenge. Before I started The Bloom, only a handful of platforms guided my global awareness. But creating this newsletter has pushed and continues to empower me to introduce a plethora (many, many hand-fulls) of new sources to my life, especially those veering away from traditional journalistic or media schemas. One such platform is Bad Form.

Bad Form is a print and digital literary magazine by Black, Asian, and marginalised writers around the world. Their team is a fantastic group of young women whose bios could be literary works of their own. Amy Baxter, the magazine's Founder, "is an Editorial Assistant at Penguin Random House [...] her dream is that books by marginalised community writers will become so ubiquitous Bad Form is made redundant. She is unsure if that will ever be realised."

Whether you're interested in a career in publishing, a book affecionado, or simply love a good interview, their website is an excellent resource for you. I recommend their interview with Booker Prize longlisted author Avni Doshi: "I think fiction has always been my first love, but it took many years of tricking and talking myself into it. Sometimes we avoid the things we care about the most because they feel too expansive, too weighty for us to take on."
