Trump Plans To Swear In Amy Coney Barrett At ‘Very Nice’ Monday Night Ceremony

TOPLINE

President Trump told reporters that the White House is preparing a “very nice event” to swear in Supreme Court Amy Coney Barrett on Monday night, insisting it will be small, unlike the last ceremony in her honor which was labeled a “super-spreader event” after numerous attendees caught Covid-19.

KEY FACTS

“We’re going to see [an event], probably at the White House later on this evening,” Trump informed reporters on Monday afternoon during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania.

The president sought to quell concerns that this ceremony may be a repeat of Barrett’s Sept. 26 nomination in the White House’s Rose Garden, after which many attendees, including the president and first lady Melania Trump, tested positive for Covid-19.

“Not a large event,” said the president of Monday night’s plans, “Just a nice event.”

A source familiar with the invitation told CNN the event is expected to be an outdoor ceremony at the White House starting at 9 p.m.

According to The New York Times, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will administer Barrett’s official Constitutional Oath.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Barrett, who was nominated by Trump exactly a month ago following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate this evening. Though Democrats have protested the nomination process due to its proximity to the presidential election, Republicans have the majority in the senate and, with just one dissenting senator, will have the votes to push through Barrett’s nomination, eight days before Nov. 3.
