As you read, please ask yourself two questions: 

  • “How might I be doing this in my business?” 
  • "How much would avoiding this mistake save me?"

Mistake #1:
Not launching at all

When I first started, I was terrified of burning out my list by launching too hard. As a result, I would wait up to a year between launches. It might sound impressive to earn 90% of your annual revenue in a couple weeks, but it's super risky. What if that launch comes up short?

I see other business owners making this same mistake. After their first bad launch, they try to build cold traffic funnels or e-commerce sales. Or they slap a "P.S. Please buy my product" line at the end of every email and hope it's enough to grow their business.

(Sorry, it's not.)

The big mistake here is that you're missing out on a MAJOR revenue driver — launches. No other strategy can easily and reliably drive as much revenue as a launch.

Look at the graph below. It charts the incremental revenue growth at IWT over the past couple of years. What do you notice?

The slow, steady rise in the graph above is the day-to-day business at work — a handful of sales here and there. 

And those periodic jumps up? Those are launches. Each is a massive infusion of cash into the business. 

When you add those launch windfalls up, it represents the bulk of our revenues:

Launches are BIG business breakthroughs that can completely change your business — and your life. 

You can still test other strategies in your business if you like, but not launching at all is a huge mistake. There is no better way to drive serious revenue than launching.


Mistake #2:
“My launch needs to be perfect”

Perfectionists hate launches because launches are complicated. (That's one reason following a proven launch template is so helpful — it simplifies your life and boosts your results.)

Because launches are complicated, it's near impossible to ship a perfect one. Maybe your second subject line didn't grab people. Maybe your fourth email only drew crickets. Maybe you're not convinced the copy in your big close is good enough.

These kinds of worries made my skin crawl. I would work long days, nights, and weekends — burning myself out to make each tiny piece perfect.

This continued until one day, exhausted, I sent an email that I knew wasn't perfect. It was packed with valuable information and useful insights, but some of the sentences were still clunky. But I was too tired to fix it, so I sent it anyway.

Much to my surprise, the email was a hit. Nobody cared about, or even noticed, the minor details I was obsessing over.

I learned a powerful lesson that day — your launch doesn't need to be perfect. If you're following the Breakthrough Launch system and you're delivering value, it's OK to make a mistake. Your funnel will still deliver.

Mistake #3:
Shiny Tactic Syndrome

Shiny Tactic Syndrome is the belief that adding complicated technology and tactics to your launches will turn them into hits.

FB ads! Segmentation! Automation! Webinars! Tripwires! Fast-action bonuses!

You bolt all of these onto your launches … which still don't sell … and you don't know why. And now you're burned out by managing this big huge unwieldy robot.

STOP!

Write your sales funnels in such a way that they interest EVERYONE rather than trying to segment 10 times.

Focus on the Launch Amplifiers that actually work and ignore the rest.


Mistake #4:
Thinking you can trick someone into buying

A couple hard truths…

  1. No one is going to randomly trip and fall and swipe their credit card. 

  2. You’re never going to trick someone into buying your course.

As I like to say: Businesses don't grow by accident.

And while you can start a business with sheer hustle — you can't sustain or grow it on hustle alone.
