NBA’s 2020 free agency period starts at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, less than 48 hours after the draft, and a scant 32 days before the start of the next season. Pretty much the only thing that anyone seems certain about is that it’s going to be a friggin’ madhouse.

Behind the Scenes of the Timberwolves’ Decision to Draft Anthony Edwards

Anthony Edwards answered a question about Minneapolis, the new home of the NBA’s no. 1 overall pick, at his post-draft Zoom press conference with a few questions of his own. “I’m curious. I have a college teammate from St. Paul. Is that near there? He tells me there’s a mall there? Mall of America? Is that it?”

“They’ll Get It at 8 or at 38”: How Animaniacs Introduced a Generation to Comedy

James Clapham/Animaniacs/Ringer illustration

The Animaniacs episode “Variety Speak,” which aired in September 1995 during the show’s third season, features a whole song about the weird inside baseball of Variety magazine. “‘Hix makes pix, but the flick needs fix,’ means someone made a movie that bombed,” Dot and Yakko sing in a call and response. “‘The veeps in charge are now at large’ means everyone involved is gone / ‘The plot conflicts, no beautiful chix,’ so it’s coming out on video soon / ‘They’re taking their licks, ’cause the critics say nix,’ and the editors are going to try to fix it in the mix.”

The Race for Defensive Player of the Year Belongs to Pass Rushers

Getty Images/Ringer illustration

This year, the NFL has driven home a point that was already pretty clear: Offenses are the league’s heroes. In the past few seasons, we have fawned over wild, high-scoring games like the Chiefs-Rams Monday Night thriller, but lamented low-scoring contests, such as Super Bowl LIII. That isn’t to say defenses are the villains. Defenses are more like antiheroes. The purpose of defense is to prevent scoring—and so it’s just not as fun to watch good defenses as it is good offenses.

The Perfect Fits of Casino

Robert De Niro needed a tie. So, deep into the shooting of Casino, one of the film’s costume designers visited the actor’s trailer and presented him with two neckwear options. After seeing them, the star asked his visitor to choose.

“I said, ‘I think it should be this one,’” says John Dunn, who, along with Rita Ryack, outfitted the movie’s cast. “And he just looked at me and he said, ‘You know, this is very important. You’d better be right.’”
