Beyond the global health crisis, Korean cinema's new feminist wave, Legal intern at TIME'S UP

Welcome to The Bloom, a newsletter to bloom into your best self! Enjoy these small seeds of joy with an intersectional feminist lens.

Looking beyond the global health crisis with female leaders: As the pandemic has made inequities across systems around the world all too apparent, it also has opened up opportunities to rebuild workplaces, to reframe leadership, and to take new approaches to climate change, health care and other global issues. NYTimes asked female leaders in crucial disciplines to talk about the role women can have in determining what the world looks like after the pandemic. The format of this article is brilliant – you'll learn quick snippets of developments around the world, directly from the fascinating women leading them. >> Full Story

The women trying to transform Burkina Faso, whatever the result of the presidential election: Burkina Faso’s presidential elections are on November 22nd, and a handful of women in rural areas are fighting for positive change, coming together to build communal development associations that might, in future, be key to ensure women in these regions are empowered to fight for change. >> Full Story

A young Ugandan climate activist’s challenge to Joe Biden: For 24-year-old Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate, climate change is not an abstract concept — it’s personal. She witnesses the impact of it on her country every day. “I have seen it in my country, I have seen how the changing weather patterns have destroyed homes, have destroyed farms, destroyed businesses, and left people with nothing. And that is what I want to change.” >> Full Story

Investing time and energy in projects outside of work can help fight burnout, anxiety, and benefit your "day job." But in practice, it can be difficult to take a step towards working on your own projects; it can leave us feeling guilty instead of fulfilled. Tune in to this fascinating podcast episode on the topic, where a professor who studies people who pursue work outside of their full-time jobs provides useful advice on finding enough time, energy, and support to spend your life the way you want to.

With this section we typically prioritize practical content with career-related matters, but this week we also wanted to include an important fund, run by Free Form – an NGO dedicating to supporting survivors of domestic violence in USA–  as they announced a $250 no-strings-attached cash to survivors of gender-based violence who need financial support during COVID. Important to note that they prioritise survivors who are Black, Latinx, Indigenous/Native, Queer and/or Trans. Please share with your networks!

Culture Trip is a platform inspiring people to explore the world's cultures and creativity through innovative technology. They've just announced a fantastic initiative "good food for a good cause" to bring you a range of online cooking classes taught by expert women refugees and migrant chefs. On the experience menu is a course on Syrian cuisineSundanese chicken dama and chilli sauce, and Ecuadorian ceviche and tortilla. Is your mouth watering too??

"I don't want Black women to change. I want us to be louder. Sassier, and demand more" is one of the many memorable, chill-provoking statements rapper Megan Thee Stallion made in a new interview for GQ. Bring tissues.

Queens Gaming Collective is a women-led gaming lifestyle brand that celebrates diversity in the male-dominated game business. They provide women creators, streamers, and competitors equal access to the infrastructure, resources, and agent representation necessary to build equitable and profitable careers in gaming. And they've just raised almost 2 million in funding!

A new wave of Korean filmmakers are tackling sexual violence through cinema, pushing what many are calling a “female film new wave.” Behind the increasing presence of women moving into the director's seat, is one novel published in 2016: “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982."

8 intriguing facts *with hilariously sassy complementing comics* about female animals, from octopuses eating their mates to the matriarchal society of lemurs.

(You know those friends who are hopeless with conversational transitions? hint hint)...While we're on the topic of octopuses, here's a how the fantastical pull of tentacle porn can help redefine sex positivity.

TikToker @tiamiscihk is a young Canadian-indigenous artist, singer, and dancer who uses social media to share different aspects of her indigenous culture. We were absolutely mesmerized by one of Tia's latest videos where her mother braids her hair while singing a song about her eyes: "Her eyes are blue, your eyes are brown. Hers represent the ocean...your eyes carry earthquakes that bring mountains to their knees."

This week we saw something truly special on Instagram from US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. During a Q&A with her community, she was asked how she stays positive and gets so much done in a day. The answer is not what you might expect from a true superwoman – and for that, we love her even more: "I don't try to do a zillion things in a day. In fact, I'm always trying to do LESS."  🌱
