The latest release of TypeMates, Sombra, was designed by Paul Eslage. Sombra is a grotesque combining geometric structure with leafy, sharply swelling strokes. It’s a family of seven styles – each one in a different weight and width – ranging from a condensed Light to an extended Black. Plus, there’s the ultra black Poster style to top it all off, with touching apertures, exaggerated incisions, and hairline punctuation.

Tongari finds its influence in Japanese lettering, a subject that designer Émilie Rigaud has studied extensively. The typeface comes in two optical sizes, with the display version boasting a stronger contrast, a higher x-height and even sharper endings. When I look at Tongari, I see natural feelings of both strength and elegance, as if Émilie had captured the style of Samurai fighters and translated it into letterforms. This makes Tongari one of my favourite typefaces of the year, without a doubt.

This mind-blowing typeface is the work of Blaze Type’s founder Matthieu Salvaggio. I say mind-blowing because Area is not only a solid sans serif, but it comes in a large family of 88 styles, revolving around two versions (Normal and Inktrap), in two widths (Normal and Extended). Just to add to its playfulness, Area comes with seven stylistic sets that allow for various possibilities. And of course, it is available as a variable font.

Also released by Blaze Type, Joly is a beautiful serif that takes inspiration from the Dutch type of the 18th Century. Joly was designed by Léon Hugues, who put great care in creating Italics that would contrast with their Roman counterparts. While the Romans are sturdy and organic, their Italics are sharp and highly slanted. As a result, the balance between the two creates a legible combination with a fresh modern touch.

Designed in Norway by Gradient Type, Poly Sans is a fresh take on mid 20th century classics. Despite its references, Poly Sans was firmly brought into the present with the addition of subtle, soft-edge inktraps. But where Poly Sans differs the most from its predecessors is with its genre-bending Italics, which almost resemble the ones of a script serif. The monospaced version has slightly deeper inktraps, making it interesting to use at places where you would normally not consider a monospace.

Despite its name, Model Standard is nothing but a conventional typeface. Model Standard comes in proportional, monospaced, and semi-monospaced cuts, making it a highly versatile typeface well-suited for any design task. I’m particularly fond of the semi-mono, which perfectly combines the qualities of the other two. Model Standard also comes as a variable font, with three axes of variation (Weight, Mono, and Italic).
