Every February, members vote on a topic to assign to one of our top-notch journalists. We’ve done this for three years running now and, thanks to our members, we produced stories on education in refugee camps, how American schools are dealing with climate change and, most recently, on spending disparities between schools in the same district.
 
In 2021 we might explore a host of possible stories: achievement gaps that have been exacerbated by lost days and months of school; undergrads unmoored on college campuses without services and with disciplines scaled back or eliminated altogether; teachers who have watched the chaos, weighed the health risks and decided to leave the classroom; and vulnerable children who can’t access the already overburdened safety net programs that are so critical to their well-being.
