Doom Eternal

Hey, here's issue #211 of Switch Weekly, with your update on all things Nintendo.

So, Nintendo came under a bit of fire this week as a result of a seemingly perfect storm of what was seen as anti-consumer moves. From pulling a livestream, doing another round of YouTube takedowns (this time focused on videos sharing Nintendo soundtracks), the ongoing confusion around March 31st, serving a cease and desist to someone making custom Joy-Con shells, and the ongoing Joy-Con drift saga. This all hitting at once has made certain members of the Nintendo fanbase rather irate. For the most part, the disatisfaction comes from a noisy section of vocal fans on Twitter/Reddit — and although the anger isn't wholly misguided, this action from Nintendo is in no way surprising or new. Companies will always protect their interests. Yes, I wish Nintendo would make their music more readily available - like stick the Mario Kart 8 soundtrack on Spotify already. Yes, the Joy-Con drift is a legit issue the company needs to address (and should have sorted a long time ago). But the sheer number of folks that seem shocked at a big corporation acting like a big corporation is a tad bewildering to me. Like I get the frustration, but at the same time, I'm in no way surprised. Maybe it's a clash of image (family friendly cute games) versus reality (business lawyer time), or maybe its just folks wishcasting that their favourite company was cooler and down with all this sorta thing. Who knows. Got thoughts on this? Hit reply and let me know.

Anyway, in other news, this week saw the annual Geoff Keighley show return — if you missed 2020 The Game Awards (it was on at like 1am in the morning for me, so I did not watch), there's a decent recap of the winners here. Nintendo fans saw a new Smash fighter revealed (link below with more on that).

A little late to the party here, but this week I picked up Doom for the Switch. It's been on my list to play forever, so with the sequel finally arriving it seemed like a good a time as any to grab it. So far, so gory. It's a solid port.

Oh, and it's been a year since I launched the Switch Weekly Patreon — as such, I just wanted to thank all who have chosen to help support the newsletter and keep it accessible to all. It means a lot

Just over 20 games out next week, including the Final Fantasy Legends collection — the full list is below as usual.

Thanks so much for reading, catch you next week,
Chris ✌️

🎮 Currently Playing — Doom (2016), Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

REVIEW Doom Eternal — Yup, this port has undergone a pretty severe downgrade in the looks department, however "the fact that it runs at a solid 30 frames per second and, most importantly, is still fantastically good fun means this 'impossible' port is nothing short of a miracle". The folks at Panic Button seem to have done an amazing job in bringing this gory shooter to Nintendo's hybrid — hats off to 'em.

Chris Scullion // Nintendo Life

REVIEW Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 — Not needing to reinvent the wheel, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 delivers the same fun and brilliant mash-up of two of the best drop-puzzle games ever with a healthy dollop of content, both classic and new

Alan Wen // The Sixth Axis

REVIEW PixelJunk Eden 2 — Considering this has launched as a Switch exclusive, I've not seen much chatter about it online so far. Anyway, this minimalistic, chill platformer is described here as "one of 2020's few pleasant surprises".

Jordan Devore // Destructoid

Did Genshin Impact swipe an opportunity from under Nintendo's nose? — The game has had an impressive debut marking a "major milestone for Chinese-developed games in general". Rob notes however that the "rhetoric around the creative debt it owes to Nintendo" has now changed dramatically. Initially the game was criticised for lifting from Breath of the Wild, but Rob points out that it's now more common to hear criticism levelled at Nintendo instead, asking if Nintendo has effectively left money on the table here?

Rob Fahey // gamesindustry

Games made under crunch conditions don’t deserve ‘Best Direction’ awards — This isn't really a Nintendo read, but is in-part related to the above item and how developer overtime/crunch should be a part of the conversation when it comes to handing out awards.

Ian Walker // Kotaku

'Empire of Sin' is much more than just 'X-COM' with Tommy Guns — I included this last week, but got the link wrong so here it is again.

Gita Jackson // Vice
