This is a thoughtful behind-the-scenes look at the history of Stripe's payments APIs. While not entirely accurate, the notion in a Bloomberg Businessweek feature story that "seven lines of code" is all that was needed for a business to power payments through Stripe became something of a north star for the company. About halfway through this article, you get an inside look at the rules and routines a team of five people used to work on Stripe's unified payments API. If nothing else, you'll learn a lot from this section alone

SEO Experiments Are Fundamentally Different From Typical A/B Experiments

This is one of the more tactically helpful Twitter threads I read all week. It dives deep into how to run an SEO experiment, what to focus on, and which were the most impactful for Brian Ta, who is the Growth PM at AngelList. One big (and perhaps unsurprising) takeaway: Content always drives more traffic. There's a strong correlation between the amount of high-quality content on a page, and the amount of incoming organic traffic to it. Read the full thread here

Consumer Trend Predictions for 2021

The Coefficient Capital team—which invests largely in consumer packaged goods like Nom Nom, Oatly, Magic Spoon, and Haus—put together its inaugural consumer trends report for 2021 that is worth reading. Given how much consumer spending habits have shifted this year, there are interesting takeaways and extrapolations that go beyond consumer goods. The big question: How will the shift to e-commerce and "the great unbundling" impact the importance of brand positioning and loyalty?

Retaining a customer is five times cheaper than gaining a new one, so I always advise startups to focus on retention at least in lock step with acquisition. In order to optimize your customer retention efforts you have to track and understand the right metrics. Here are nine of the top ones, but I recommend whittling it down even further and making just a few of them your core retention metrics to begin with. 

2020 DocSend Startup Index: Pitch Deck Interest

The DocSend team put together this fascinating report to help startups gauge VC appetite for pitch decks. In this index, you get a peek into how many pitch decks founders are sending out, the amount of pitch decks potential investors are reviewing, and how much time they're actually spending reading those decks. There's even a list of status updates for over 360 VC firms. This is a brilliant and informative pitch deck interest index, worthy of a bookmark

Can Developer Productivity Be Measured?

I really appreciate this article because it discusses a challenge that almost all engineering managers or CTOs feel, but few name out loud. It dives into the pitfalls of output measurement, as well as some alternate ideas for measuring developer productivity at the right levels. While I agree that you get what you measure, you can also get your team into trouble if you measure the wrong things (or even the right things unfairly). You'll find a few ideas in this article that will help you measure developer output more effectively

The Almost Epic Engineering Disaster at Uber

Buckle up, this is quite a long Tweetstorm—but it's worth it. McLaren Stanley was a senior software engineer at Uber for four years, and shares the story of what was almost a massive, multi-million-dollar engineering disaster. It all comes back to—one word—Swift. This is an enthralling story that will get any engineer's heart racing, and it's also a cautionary tale. It goes to show just how powerfully detrimental the sunk cost fallacy can be.

I read this and thought, "This is genius." Air purifiers easily cost between $100-300, but there is a cheaper DIY version you can make for $50 in less than a minute. This is a great breakdown of the thinking behind and results attached to this experiment. As I was reading it, I couldn't help but think about other DIY solutions that, while perhaps not as elegant, might be faster and more effective than the current alternatives. It's great food for thought and, if nothing else, a smart idea for a cheaper air purifier
