Liz WillenDear reader,

For many of us working, teaching and learning remotely in the pandemic, returning after the holidays has a completely different feel. And these days, so do many aspects of education. In case you missed it, we reported over the holiday on how small colleges are finding ways to transform themselves, a remarkable development for a traditionally slow-moving sector.

At the same time, colleges are beginning to offer detailed salary information about which majors pay off, but it’s not yet clear how seriously students and parents will take it. This week, we also bring you a look back at some of the year’s most interesting education research, along with a peak at President-elect Joe Biden’s pick for new U.S. education secretary and some advice for more equitable thinking about middle school admissions in New York City.

Finally, I would love for you to read my story about a mother of four who went back to school to become a nurse in the midst of a pandemic, as a reminder of the long and difficult road student parents face. As always, we love to hear from our readers. Welcome back, and stay safe.
