Why You Should Diversify Your Traffic Sources

Last week I mentioned how Facebook blocked its 17 million Australian users from posting links to any news item - either local or international (including "news" from many government and business sites).

This was a backlash against the Australian government proposing laws that would make Facebook pay for news content.

Well, a week later Facebook has relented and reinstated our news feeds, promising to talk with Australian media outlets about paying them for news content.

This is relevant (even if you don't live in Australia) if you use Facebook and particularly if you're a content-producer who gets traffic from Facebook. Some figures show Australian news links shared on Facebook fell 80% during the past week.

What effect would an 80% drop in traffic from Facebook mean for you?

Google would be governed by the same law, but they have already commenced negotiations to pay for news content.
