Biden Launches Airstrike Against Iran-Backed Militia In Syria

TOPLINE

The Pentagon conducted airstrikes against Iran-linked militias in Syria on Thursday in one of the first known military actions ordered by President Biden, days after militias launched rockets at U.S. forces in Iraq and tensions between Iran and the United States continue to simmer.

KEY FACTS

The airstrikes destroyed several structures used by Iran-backed Shi’a militias operating on the border between Syria and Iraq, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby announced in a statement Tuesday evening (the news was first reported by Reuters).

Kirby cast the strikes as a defensive move following several rocket attacks on American facilities in the Iraqi cities of Baghdad and Erbil this month.

The White House vowed Tuesday that the groups responsible for those rocket attacks — believed to be Shi’a militias underwritten by Iran — will be “held fully to account.”
